Black Smoke?

Noose ยท 2007-09-06 23:48

I have a '98 C-15 cat and it doesn't smoke, yet other guys on the crew are running the same engine and when they are grabbin' gears they smoke a little. I don't care but am curious why theirs do?

Noose, normally nowadays, smoke is the result of someone "tweaking" the fuel in some manner. These newer style engines (especially Cats,) are all designed to comply with stringent emissions reg's set by Big Brother. In the olden days of manual fuel systems, almost anyone with a little knowledge of a diesel engine could take it upon himself to turn the fuel up and make it smoke and run a little better. This day and age, you need a laptop computer with the proper software to achieve the same thing. Most likely, your compadres are running with a little more fuel pressure than you have, or possibly they haven't had a tune-up in some time, and their engines are running somewhat out of spec. Out of tune valvetrains will cause some excessive smoking as well, along with lousy fuel mileage as a result. Your '98 C-15 sounds to me like it's doing it's job at the moment...

It might have to do with the way right foot slams on the pedal ,ask them what kind of fuel milage are they getting and don't be surpised if your truck is better on fuel than theirs

Black smoke is unburnt fuel which essentially costs you money. It could be the other guys trucks hasn't checked their air filter and its clogged up or their intercooler is plugged up. Cat engines always seem to blow black more than others. A truck I used to drive was powered with a 3306 that thing would belch the black. I looked at another 3306 powered truck and it did the same.

Our rescue truck is the same way, It has a cat same motor same ones as yours I think? But you can tell when that thing is on scene! Talk about bug control!!!!!

If you honked on that 3306 it would blow out black splatter if the stack had some moisture in it

You are trying to say 3 4 06, right?

Nope it was the 10 litre option of Cat the 3306 iis a mechanical B model engine they had pretty good power for their size. They were very common in Kenworth T-450 I forget what replaced them I think it was the 3176 ?

We have a 98 357 Pete Boom truck with a 3306 rated for 300 horse. Boy is it slow on the highway when you hook a tiltdeck to her. Especially since both our T800 KWs have 525 Hp. However, It has 18,000 miles and 4,600 hours. Yep, been averaging 3.9 miles per hour. It doesn't smoke much though.

The 3306 was better than the L-10 Cummins it was competing with. The old venerable 3406B and E were and still are good engines the C model with its half and half electronic/mechanical fuel injection was troublesome.
