Blue Exhaust

Hi, My '86 International dump (L10 Cummins) for sometime smokes more than most. The mornings are the worst coming down the hill at 1/4 throttle. Big billowing clouds of blue smoke. A buddy of mine said the injectors are due, but another said flat cams. Injectors are $1600 for 6 rebuilds +labor. It starts instantly, even on a cold morning (30 degrees) and has full power most of the time. Power goes down when tank pressre is too high. I relieve the tank pressure via fill cap. I get 8 miles per gallon and use no oil between changes. They pay the same for dirt from a smoker or non-smoker truck. Would you do anything about it, if so what. The picture is at idle fully warmed up. THX-Brad

Have you had an oil analysis done? Something is definately wrong. If the injectors are bad, chances are the fuel is washing the cylinders and could be causing the pistons to scuff. The oil would show an excessive amount of fuel in it, and the leak by could explain why your oil level doesn't change. I guess it would depend on how long you want the engine to last.

or mabe you can have water in the fuel because our 07 mack dump smokes like that and we are going to rebuild the engine

An injection shop should be able to test your injectors after removal and be able to tell you that they are, in fact, bad. Your engine could still start well with not so good injectors if the engine still pumps good compression, which is a good thing. Injectors that don't atomize fuel properly will cause white/blue smoke because all the diesel isn't being burned. It's also a smoke that will kinda "burn the eyes". I'd have those injectors tested.

I would check the compression while you have the injectors out, could be low. But usually if the compression is low its a little harder to start when cold.
