Bobcat 435 ZHS fuse problem

JeffE ยท 2016-11-12 14:30

Hello, I'm a newbie to the forum and excavating equipment. I bought a 2004 Bobcat 435 ZHS from a Purple Wave auction recently and it was running fine until it suddenly stopped. I did some troubleshooting over the phone with a Bobcat service technician. The 20 amp "SW power" fuse was blown and I removed the electric fuel pump to have it checked. They tested the pump and said it sounded "weak", so I replaced it. I replaced the 20 amp SW power fuse. I cracked the bleed screw on top of the fuel/water separator and turned the key to "on". The new pump made no noise. The 20 amp SW power fuse blew again.

I just did a quick search on google for a 435 sw fuse.. Found back in 2015 a similar problem, on this site, w/ a 430 that Willey59 helped out with.. The poster never replied back with the fix tho. They were checking the injection pump shut-off solenoid, for possibly being shorted out.. You need to post the engine model..

The label on the engine is partly burned, but I can make out 3 numbers: Kubota V2003 04Q1017 G488-12000

Engine model Kubota V2003-M-DI-TE2B-BC-1 Also incidentally, the high speed button on the blade lever does not work(i.e. it stays in low speed), and the gas gauge does not work. I don't know if those are related to the "SW power" fuse.

Deere skids had the same problem. We found the problem was the circuit spiked to 22 amps by using a device called a fuse buddy or an amp meter. We stuck a 30 amp fuse in and problem solved.Just a guess but you can do no harm by trying,( if it is a ground fault or short then the 30 amp fuse will still protect the circuit)

I don't have a manual on a 435, but it sounds like you have a dead short circuit to ground on the switched power fuse circuit because from your description it blows that fuse as soon as you power up the ignition, and I wager it ain't going to be easy finding it. When you power up the ignition you should hear one long beep from the alarm. Just curious, with this fuse blowing, after you hear that long beep from the alarm, do you hear three short beeps from the alarm?

I tried a 25a and 30a fuse, and both blew. No fuel pump sound. I hear the long initial beep, but not the 3 short beeps. I got a service manual and tried to read the wiring schematic, but it might as well be written in Greek! Any other suggestions before I schedule a service technician for a house call?

You've got a dead short to ground on that circuit, it will never work until you find it and that won't be easy to do. I don't have a manual on the 435, the only thing I have is a manual on the 430 and I don't know how similar they are, but on the 430 diagram the switched power fuse powers the radio, then it continues on to power the electric fuel pump, the travel alarm harness, the load moment system harness, the detent button on left joystic (horn), the detent button on right joystick (which goes back to ECM), and lastly it powers the button on the blade lever that controls the two speed drive, so the switched power fuse circuit goes to a number of points on the machine, and it's not like it's right out there in the open. But somewhere in that circuit is either a wire or a component that's shorted to ground. Could be the radio has fried inside, could be rodent damage to harness, but it's going to take checking that circuit and the various things it feeds to find the problem.

The parts breakdown shows it does have an electric shut down on it.. turns off w/the key switch.. It located left of the injection pump.. Just unplug it an check to see if the fuse blows.. Good luck..

There's certainly no harm in trying unplugging the fuel solenoid, but I don't think that's the problem, can't say for certain though. If it's like other G series Bobcat excavators, the pull coil for the fuel solenoid is controlled by the fuel relay in the fuse box and is fuse protected by fuse #8, different fuse. The hold coil for the fuel solenoid is controlled solely by the main controller (ECM). Since the fuel solenoid hold coil is controlled by the ECM, whenever you get a fault on that circuit it will pretty much always sound three beeps of the alarm and throw a fault code. That's the way Bobcat machines typically work.

Thank you Willie59 and thepumpguysc. Is the electric shut down plug you're talking about under the seat behind the rear access panel?

  11. #11thepumpguysc2016-11-13 22:41

All I know is the solenoid is to the left of the injection pump.. how you access it is ?? without seeing it.. It should be on the oil dipstick side.. If you don't know where the inj. pump is.. follow the steel lines from the injectors in the head, down to the injection pump..

Well, I threw in the towel and called the Bobcat technician. It took him about 2 hours to find the short. It was in the cable of wires going up the left console, probably from raising and lowering. Runs great now. Thanks for all your help!

Sometimes that's what it takes. I had a feeling it was a spot in the harness, just where was the question. You could have spent days searching for that gremlin, probably a good call to let a Bobcat tech have at it as they have experience working on those things daily and was able to knock it out in 2 hours. Money well spent. :drinkup

i'm a couple days late, but i was gonna suggest you start looking around the base of the LH console for rubbed wires. on 430/435 E35/45/55 excavators the area around the base of the LH console has the harnesses stretched and pulled around everything. seems to be a common spot. i've found 3 or 4 in the past year now... :drinkup
