Driving my 753 (not very fast) hit a short stump with front edge of the bucket. All hydralics stopped and engine still running. Stopped engine and checked..sure enough the large belt from flywheel to hydro pulley broken. questions??? The belt looked in good shape so what caused it to break at impact? Have i damaged something else? Code showed HP-2. The book showed pretty easy to install new belt. I dont have a special tool or spring tensioner to to gauge belt tightness. Can i just wing on belt tension? Any suggestions and advise is appreciated. Thanks again
I have never seen one break on impact. Not to say it can't happen just never seen it. Yea belt is pretty easy. Kinda like an alternator belt. Special tool is not need. As you push the top of the tensioner down with the 3/8 bolt loosened you will see the pointer go from 12 o'clock to 3. Hold it there and tighten the bolt. Job done.
Thank you Hardline for your info. I'm going to get a new belt and try and install it today. Hopefully the old belt was on its way out and the jolt sent it over the edge and nothing else is wrong. Thanks again.
Thats kind of what I was thinking that it was just brittle or already slightly broken and the impact just finished the job. Belts break and we never know why do we? LOL we just fix them.
HP2 code.. i'm assuming this is a C or F series machine with the BOSS system. your belt tensioner ( if original) wont have the clockspring pointer on the tensioner for adjustment. check the tensioner pulley for wear, unevenness and if the pulley has any side to side movemnet or wobble before you install a new belt check the fan drive belt for damage, you'll have to (partially) remove it to replace the drive belt anyway. :drinkup
I dont know if it is a C or F and i dont see anything that looks like a pointer. The new belt arrived yesterday and i'm going to start this a.m. to try and install it. If no pointer how do i know if it is tight enough? I have faith with everyone's help you guys can get me through this. Thanks again. I will let you all know how it turns out or " my next question "
well... not too tight, but not too loose not so tight that you dont have any flex to the belt ( check it between the pulleys @ the bottom) but not so loose that it starts to slip. if you use 1 finger under the belt and can deflect the belt 1/4" - 1/2" you are probably close enough. if you are loose, the drives will stop, without pulling the engine rpm down. :drinkup
Thanks crewchief for the info. i hope to get it on today. if not tomorrow for sure. to many must do chores today. i will let you know when i get it on.
The 753C had a two piece rear door, orange on bottom, black at top. The F had a one piece stamped steel rear door, all orange.
theres some late C series machines with 1 piece doors just to add to the confusion :drinkup
Yep, typical Bobcat, one of those cases where serial number won't help, like the rubber bushings in the pintle arms, big ones or little ones. LoL
If no tensioner I always go with the "1/4"-1/2" deflection method
