I recently bought a bobcat skid steer. It has been working great but yesterday it suddenly started acting like the brake was locking up on it. It will crank and run fine but then go about 6-10 feet and suddenly lock up and if you do not back off on the handle will shut off and will not move again until you shut it off and restart it, and then the same thing 6-10 feet and it locks up again. Does not matter forward or reverse. Once it locks up there is a clicking noise coming from the center access panel between the foot pedals where the parking brake is located. If you put the parking brake on the clicking stops but if you release the brake the clicking starts and it still will not move again until you shut it back off. This is a 98 model and does not have all the instrument panel lights. Thanks in advance.
check your fuses and relays for corrosion, also pull and clean your battery connections after that, theres a couple things to check, when it happens keep an eye on the volt meter, if voltage drops below 9V or goes above 15v the problem is your alternator. the bics has an operating voltage of 9v-15v and will shut off when it doesnt see that voltage. 2nd, and most common, is a bad ground wire that runs from the battery to a splice in the mainframe harness. that ground is for the brake and bics coil. it's located a few inches from the brake harness connector. splice in a new wire and run it all the way back to the battery. brake solenoid has 2 coils, the PULL coil gets it power from the brake fuse and relay, HOLD coil gets it power from the bics.
Crewshief888, thanks for the information. I checked the voltage and the machine is maxing out the voltage gauge at over 18 so it seems that this may be my problem. I am guessing this is likely the alternator. It does it regardless of the if I have it idled down or full power.
glad it's something simple
