any one out there tell me why i cant raise boom off the ground with hoses disconnected

Your posts are a little confusing to me rookmiser. Is the dipper extended all the way out and the boom down ? Before you removed those lines did the machine sound as if it were doing anything when you tried to raise the boom ? Did you remove both lines from the boom cylinder ? If you did , did you hit the boom up and down control to see if there is oil coming out of the hoses ? If it is spraying oil when you do that, there is most likely a problem with the cylinder itself.

HEF members will need to know what model Cat backhoe you have and if it has pilot controls. I don't know anything about Caterpillar other than basic things common to all T/L/Bs.

Removed what lines? Not a pro but if u removed the boom cyl lines and the boom don't raise that could be your problem lol If your saying you removed the lines off the boom cyl at the cyl and you can't raise the boom by moving crowd or bucket cyl or by reversing the machine to try to "jack" the boom up or was you lifting the bucket with another machine or ?? I too am a little confused, you might try to give all the info possible and we if you get any response Pj

Many of the newer machines have pilot operated valving in the cylinders to prevent the creep the old machines developed, they do not rely on the hand control valve block to 'Hold' a cylinder and need opposite movement oil pressure to release the previous direction or return oil side of the cylinder. If both lines go to a block on the cylinder you most likely have one of these style. Check your service manual for this as a possible design on your machine. And no, if it is this way you cannot remove the lines and force it the other way, it has to have pilot oil from the one side ported to the other to reposition a valve internally.

I was thinking "extenda-boom" won't suck in. Does CAT still make those even? Been years since I've messed with a backhoe... I hate the darn things! About as useful as a spork.

The boom is extended in the digging position. Hydrualics quit.i am trying to raise the boom for transportation.temoved hydraulic hoses hoping to lift the boom up.it has the back of the back hoe lifted up when on level ground.removed hoses.it shouls move freely?

  8. #8Catback2013-12-13 07:17

W/o the assistance of hydraulics, moving freely is a relative term. Depending on the weight of the stick, and boom and bucket, you will need a lot of force to move it. If you have ample force and it still does not move, the cylinders must be damaged.

We need more information to be able to help you. Hydraulics quit ??? Does that mean you cannot use the stabilizers also? Can you explain that ? Does DMiller's comment about the pilot valves apply to your cylinder ? If it does not, something bad has happened to the boom cylinder. Any chance the boom base pin has sheared or seized up and not allowing the boom to pivot there ? If you get really desperate drive one of the pins out of the boom cylinder. Not a very safe thing to do, if it will come out.

Can you find a more accurate picture , heck it don't even show the muffler bearings in that picture :tong

  13. #13oceanobob2013-12-15 10:34

Aren't the muffler bearings located in the smoke grinder? * Could the hydraulic ram have a load check in the hose attachment fitting 'boss'? This would have to be released in order to stroke the ram mechanically....

This happened to us once ,it was the wiggling pin in the wobble shaft , coded a 9ASCAP. New spark plugs fixed it.

It sounds like what happened to the dipper cylinder on my 580sl this summer. The bolt that holds the piston on the cylinder rod backed out. I could hear the piston hit the rod but no cylinder action.

Go get yourself some hydraulic hose and fittings and whatever else you need to plumb the boom cylinder into another power source, preferably a farm tractor. They are the greatest portable hydraulic power pac one man ever told another about. Get the cylinders where you need them and valve off. Should be good to move to the shop. Ken
