i am still new to the world of dozing. we have an '81 D5B. i know i need to adjust the linkages for the hand brakes (never used the foot pedals), but i really dont know what they are supposed to feel like when they are correct. i ran a buddys 7 this weekend and i sure liked the power of something that big ... anyways, his brakes had a different feel to them than mine. his you could feather, mine are either all or nothing. any comments would be great! thanks!
The hand levers are the clutches and the foot pedals are the brakes. What are you trying to adjust?
when ya pull them out half way they are the clutches, then all the way out are the brakes. right now i have to pull the levers out all the way and the one barely seems to work, the other is fine... just all or nothing. wondering if they should be more like in your thruck where the further you pull them, the more brake there is.
You should be able to have some partial braking when between half way, and all out. Depending on the age of your machine, it may have a hydraulic park brake release that requires you to have the machine running with the button down to adjust the brakes. I like about 2 inches of free travel on the foot pedals. There are two covers on the rear of the machine under the fuel tank on each side that need to be removed to adjust the brakes. They are square with a tab on one side. Once off, there is an adjustment nut that takes a 9/16" socket to adjust. I normally run them down tight, and back off a round and a half. That usually gives me the correct amount of brakes. If you have a winch like my two machines do, the left side is a pain to get to.
thanks for the informative reply lonestar, i will try to adjust them when it is back at the shop. i dont have a winch so it sounds like it should be pretty easy. thanks again!
