How did it break? Make sure that you haven't bent the rod.

thanks for the reply oldseabee....the rod appears to be straight, i shut it down as soon as i noticed the rod "jump" . the end of the piston is still half on the pin with the other half pushed against the boom. she broke while i was digging a trench to bury a stump. she's a tired ol' girl so i have been babying it quite a bit. the end of the rod nearest the boom appears to be welded on so i wondered if it could be re-welded or i may have to have a new one made or hopefully find another cylinder in my area i guess ?

If it's just that the weld broke where the rod eye was welded on, that's a common problem. A competent welder can reweld it. A few things to watch: where the ground clamp is attached. It is best if it is hooked on the eye, but it can be hooked on the end of the rod, as long as you make sure it is out past the point where it goes inside the gland seal. NEVER let anyone hook the ground where the path of the electricity goes through pins and bearings, as it will scar them. And of course hooking it to the cylinder barrel would be worse. make sure you protect the chrome on the rod against weld spatter and mis-strikes. I usually use 7 or 8 layers of duct tape. Good Luck, Mitch

thanks mitch ... i'm trying to upload a photo to show where the break is...it is where the 2 brown lines are...

Ok, the eye itself is broken. I've actually never seen that before, but I'm sure it could be welded. It might be a better idea to have a new eye made and welded on.

thanks you guys for all your help...i talked to a shop that repairs cylinders and he pretty much said what mitch504 said...he says it can be welded , but suggests i have the eye made and then welded on or try and find a replacement cyclinder...the deere dealer here has a search on for parts but i need to get the ser.# off the machine...i found a cylinder on my own but the machine doesn't start and he wants a grand for it..do you guys think thats an alright deal? thanks td-5 for the links as well!

Hi ! flekr , an grand for that cylinder might look expensive but just ask your ONTRAC Deere dealer how much they would ask for a new cylinder ( make sure you are seated and belted well to your seat !! lol ) , welding an eye would at leat make you go for a while , because if your like me you ain't gonna put 2000hrs a year ont he machine !! , I have a shop close to home heare that does cylinder , Montreal Hydraulic , they are good , good luck
