Broken stud on bottom radiator tank w900

workshoprat92 ยท 2020-11-07 20:05

Was pulling the radiator from my 92 W900 today and my helper got to muscular with the nuts on the studs on the bottom tank pipe and broke the stud off. He hasent developed a quitting sense yet and does not understand dont just pull till it breaks. Total lack of developed feel that a nut or bolt is stuck and needs heat or other means to get it loose! Anyhow now i have a broken stud. The stud looks to be welded to the tank and has a rather large flat heat on the inside. Are these replaceable? Am i screwed for buying a new tank or at very worst taking my tank off to repair this? Anyone ever had this problem?

It's repairable, and aftermarket tanks are available also. Not the first time that's happened for sure.

If it's steel I would brazen a new one on, if it's copper then I would solder a new one on and if it's aluminum well time to break out the cutting torch to weld one on. A picture would be helpful of it and where it's at.

Do I need to pull the tank? My hope is that its silver soldered!

    It will be steel.

Its steel and welded in place and I'm pretty sure you will need to remove the tank to fix it.

    Welded how?

Resistance welding is the joining of metals by applying pressure and passing current for a length of time through the metal area which is to be joined.

And some radiator cores are beta welded.

Also known as spot welded, made one from a 4/0 gauge wire, some wood, couple pieces of solid ground wire, a switch, wire with a plug and a microwave transformer. Close to how this one is made.

Does this 92 KW have a Cummins low flow system {big cam four}? If so there is a divider in the bottom tank. There is a special sealer used on the divider I think it was #721 IIRC, but contact a radiator shop or KW to make sure. If it isn't sealed properly it won't circulate coolant and can cause over heating problems.

It has a 12.7 series 60. Doing an engine swap with another series 60

    A-OK.
