building a driveway

Question on how guys prefer to build a drive. Do you cut out topsoil and fill back up with 1&2's then topcoat, or do you strip topsoil, shape roadbed with dirt then 1&2's with topcoat? It you trench it out does water not lay in the base material? I know you crown the top but water still lays in base. If roadbed is shaped prior to base, water that soaks thru stone will shed off. Which way do you guys prefer and why...guys here do it both ways and never sure which is best.

Around here dig out 8-9 inches, save topsoil if you want . Compact dirt ,add a blend stone (stone & fines mix), repair any soft spots ,compact stone till hard . Then pave ( 6 inches stone ,2-3 inches asphalt) The fines in the stone fill the voids so it doesn’t hold water under pavement.
