Building A Medium Size MX Track – Tips Needed

ktmsprocket ยท 2010-02-05 06:12

Hi, New to this. I want to lay an MX track for personal use on a large block of lightly undulating land. Not many trees, a few inches of topsoil then clay base. In Australian terms it has good rainfall in the area so I need to consider drainage and run off. There is water in a small dam which is roughly at the centre of the land. I have a CASE 850B dozer with ripper on the rear and 4 in 1 on the front (see my other post). Any tips much appreciated - from planning, to how to go about cutting the track, to buildin berms or jumps...etc. PS. Plenty of lumber nearby too.

I build a lot of mx tracks for private use and personally have my own. get ready for a ton of work if it is well used. at some locations where there isnt much dirt i cut swales on either side of long straights to get some dirt. make sure if you have bowl corners or high berms that they have somewhere to drain on the inside. everybody loves big technical jumps, but if you are using the track to get in shape and practice make the jumps with rounded landings because if you put in a long moto and make a little mistake when you get tired you wolnt wake up in the hospital. (The smalles sx double on my track put me in for 2 days). i also strip the topsoil and put it on the straights and turns so nice ruts and berms form. if you cant tell i love building tracks about as much as i love to ride!

In December I had to travel to Corona, Ca to a dealer. Next door was Kawasakis practice track. They spent about two hours every morning prepping the track and they used a track skidsteer to do everything.

Tracks are made a lot different now than they were back in the '70's when I was riding. (1976 Yamaha YZ125) Our local club's track was built by a couple of members that ran dozers, but tracks followed natural ground much more than they seem to now. Don't drain it too well...it ain't motocross without a little mud. Have fun! :drinkup

The track will follow the terrain other than have added jumps and berms.
