Good morning, Thinking about buying a second hand boom lift and would like to hear from the experts on what to be aware of mechanically, electrically, hydraulics, etc., other than the obvious. I do have some limited experience on all mentioned but have no experience on boom lifts. Looking at a JLG 450 AJ with about 3500 hours / dual fuel etc., for light residential use only. Appreciate any and all info. Thanks!
I wouldnt say theres anything too much different than looking over any piece of equipment. JLG's like to leak from the basket rotators, swing gear boxes, and drive hubs (check the inside of the rim for residue). Also look up under the machine and see if everything is dry. There is a hose rotator in the bottom of the base that likes to leak. Visually inspect the cable track and make sure all the links are free, hoses and cords are not damaged. When you operate the machine make sure everything functions through a full motion and that everything is smooth. Controllers arent super expensive but something to be aware of. I personally do not like gas engines in lifts but can understand why someone might like to have the dual fuel. If you dont need it i would get a diesel. Much better fuel consumption and reliability. Hope that helps!
That sums it up nicely. Do you have a recommendation, based on reliability, part availability, ease of maintenance, etc., as to which make/model machine to purchase. Thanks much!
I agree with barklee, go for a diesel engine if you can. Not just for reliability but also fuel consumption. A gas powered boom lift will use a tank of gas in about 10 hours. A diesel boom lift will go 30 to 40 hours on a tank. 4 wheel drive is also important if you plan to venture off cement & pavement at all. 2wd is only for hard, flat surfaces. Brand? I think it depends on the quality of the dealers in your area. Look around at the rental lots in your area, see what they are buying.
