Hello, the boss owns a Case 1845C. The coupler keeps breaking in the same place, every couple of years. The machine came with a spare coupler, which had been repaired/re-welded at this same place. This leads me to believe that the machine is fighting itself somehow. My suspicion is something over extends or retracts, or does not extend, or retract the same distance. We use a 65 inch wide bucket, mainly for plowing snow. I keep trying to get him to buy some kind of blade. It would be so much easier on both me & the machine, but that has not happened yet. The bucket mounts look fine. I don’t know what to start checking for first. Has anyone any idea?
I hate to be critical but that looks like a failure due to an inferior repair. The lock pins take an enormous amout of strain and need a very strong channel to guide and hold their movement. Had a few 1845C machines but never paid any attention to the mount. Given the mounts on my Bobcat and New Holland machines that is a very small area to try and hold the lock pin. We have had to rebuild several mounts before they hit the 2000hr mark so they are a wear item.
Thanks Frogfarmer, I had noticed it seemed like not the strongest repair had been made. The guy doing our welding now will be able to see how this failed, and repair it correctly. Good to hear that it is a"wear" piece. Maybe there's nothing wrong with our machine. Upon closer inspection of our bucket, it seems as something about the mounting flanges are looser on that side, allowing the bucket to move about a little when attached. It looks like it allows more strain on the lock pin. Since this was used equipment when he bought it, who knows what kind of deformation/wear there could be.
Don't Feel like you were singled out with this problem, or yet alone twice ….. this must be a very common problem with the 1845C's ….. My buddies 1845C was/has broken in the same place a few times (he's owned the Case since New) ….. we've been looking into replacing the b*****d sized backing plate with the more common universal mounting system to be able to open up a bigger selection of the available new/used attachments …. as well as we could interchange ours back and forth. There are quite a few aftermarket companies out there that make these at very reasonable prices ….. check it out before you get carried away into rebuilding the narrower plate ….. Cheers
