Hello, everyone I have case 580 sk I pulled the backhoe up on a slight hill and parked it there for a few days jumped in to move it would not move in forward or reverse hooked truck to it and got it on level ground nothing. So then decided to change the trans axel fluid and filters found and checked the screens in the line were nice and clean. I tried again nothing but when I checked the new filter there was no fluid in it ? that's where I am at no forward or reverse also I let the backhoe run to warm it up thinking could help nothing could this be charge pump whats next inline to check out thanks mike
Is your driveshaft still turning? If it is, it would seem most likely that your charge pump has failed. If drive shaft is not turning, then your probably have broken flex plate bolts or maybe bad torque converter. Either way you probably have to take out the torque converter housing.
Ok we had this very issue with our sk. Very first thing to check is the cut out solenoid for the shift cut out. you can pull the solenoid valve out and inspect it. the plunger in the valve is spring loaded to push away from the coil. when coil is energized it pulls the plunger towards the coil. you can use small screw driver and check the movement of the plunger. If it is bad replace the solenoid. If all looks good with this unit then you need to do a pressure check of the hydraulic pressure to the fwd rev clutches. you can also do this check before you pull the solenoid and after to confirm it was in fact the solenoid. From there if that does not fix it remove floor plate so you can see drive shaft that goes from torque converter to the transaxle. Install pressure gauge to fwd clutch circuit. With tractor running, parking brake off in gear and fwd selected and the drive shaft does not move but you have correct pressure to clutch packs the the problem is in the torque converter. If you have good pressure and the drive shaft turn then you probably have slipping clutches. If you have incorrect pressure then it is a supplu or valve problem. A simple pressure and drive shaft turn test will let you know which are you need to look at.
I should have mentioned that I looked at cut out solenoid first and the drive shaft is spinning I will have to get a gauge to check pressure that's why I took new filter off to see if there where any fluid circulating with it being dry is that leaning towards charge pump? thanks mike
Also should of asked in my last post any way to test charge pump or is that one of those things you just buy as part of the elimination process ? thanks mike
Ok so at this point you know torque converter good and clutches not applying! Now your at point you really need pressure test. If test shows low pressure you got bad pump, pressire regulator valve or something in system causing bad pressure. If pressure is good then you clutches are slipping.
Unfortunately, to test a charge pump, you need oil flow & pressure. How fast is the driveshaft turning? Lazily? or as a blur? It should only turn while the transaxle is in neutral. If a gear is selected & placed in fwd or rev - it should be stopped, as long as the brakes are on & not moving the machine. How did you check the cut-out solenoid? It may be working electrically, but is the valve moving & not stuck?
I will tell you the charge pump is a very expensive part. It would suck to change it out and still have the same problem. It would be very nice to know for sure if it is the charge pump for sure!
will there be any pressure to test if there is no fluid even going through the filter. also the drive shaft is always spinning at a pretty good clip even when I have the shifter in gear forward or reverse. where would you suggest to buy gauge for pressure test
You can only try to fit a gauge & see..... Doesn't really make sense....if the drive shaft is turning there must be some pressure or effort to drive. Raise the machine off the ground, turn it off & rotate the rear wheels by hand. They should be quite firm to turn & drag some gears. If one free spins, you have a broken axle. This will not allow drive, unless in 4wd. There still is the trans cut-out valve possibility??
dumb ? where is trans cut out valve ? and is the clutch cut out solenoid located on top of the trans axle just to make sure what I am talking about. also checked each wheel by spinning seem fine both are firm and drive shaft spins all the time in the air or on ground and still no fluid getting to the filter I am stumped thanks mike
Yes, they are the same, the solenoid actuates the valve, remove the coil & unscrew the valve #25. Check for proper operation by applying 12v to it "on the bench" so you know the small spool is moving freely. If this doesn't fix it, it's looking more likely you will need to pull the convertor housing & take a look inside......
UPDATE took another look at the cutout solenoid removed cleaned tested not working. took it back out got it to function put back in backhoe runs great wanted to tell everyone thanks for all the knowledge and in put lots of time and money saved thanks again mike
SWEET! love it when its something easy to fix!
