Nothing worse than a tractor that does not turn.

Can we be a little bit more vague?

The steering was working fine drove it down the road to just go through the gears and then it seems like the front end is just floating across the ground. Will turn when I pick up some dirt in the bucket.

Diff lock is a good answer but the other part you mentioned makes a difference too. it sounds like everything works but the weight distribution is screwy. Is the backhoe locked in place as close to the cab as possible? Maybe you've got that weight too far towards the back so the front wheels aren't really touching the ground, or at least making enough contact to turn appropriately... Do you have a giant hoe bucket? Is there something else not standard on the hoe side?

If the weight on the front wheels hasn't changed, and they seem to scrub on loose gravel, even scrub a bit on pavement, then find the differential lock pedal. On most machines it's a small pedal behind your right foot, but you should find some better info with a little searching. Make sure that releases on it's own, it should be spring loaded and pop back up on it's own. They get rusty and tight, and it could have gotten stepped and stuck if you don't use it often. Which you probably don't because it's the obvious answer and you didn't mention it.

Any chance the counter weight on the front of the tractor has been lost. The backhoe attachment is very heavy and requires a counter weight.
