Case 580C King pin

Anyone ever change one of these? I ended up cutting the king pin out with a large cut off wheel. My cutting torch wouldn't touch the metal after using a large rose bud, lots of heat I was going no where. After beating on it with a sledge hammer I decided to cut the pin top and bottom. Put it in my 20 ton press and was literally putting all my weight (220lbs) on the jack bar. It finally popped. After sanding the surface rust, the new pin slides in so easy. Why was this so stuck?

Google "Case 580 C King pin" as suggested by Delmer in post #5 of the second thread listed. Someone suggested using never seize - sounds like a good idea to me.

I did put that on my pin.. but after the grease was applied it pushed most if not all of it through a little hole in the back side. I have a hunch that if these are not greased, water gets in and locks them up real good.

Don't worry, it only pushed out the excess. It's a tight fit and the pin doesn't spin in the bore since it's keyed with a wedge so it doesn't wear but it will expand if it is allowed to corrode by getting wet so grease won't hurt. The needle bearings look like the weak link to me so if you keep them greased, the king pins will probably be fine. Mine had been driven for years after the bearings were destroyed so the stuck king pin was the least of my problems.

I have done several hundred king pin sets on the C/D/E/K. You can not over grease them enough, the service for greasing is every 10 hours and the seals are made to allow dirt and water to be forced out of the bearings. Most of the king pins are stuck like said rusted tight in the spindle and you cut out the bearing and use a cut off disc to remove it. Most people don't have a 50+ ton press which will push the pin out with little effort. My 20 ton press and my 30 ton struggles at times even with the rosebud turned up. Your C is almost 40yrs old and it may have been it's first king ping replacement or it's 10 depending on it's ownership/ maintenance history. Good that you took care of it because it's hard on the rest of the steering system, and you repair it before needing to bore or install a new Weldon end.
