hello to anyone reading this. recently swapped the backhoe on my old machine for one i found that was in much better condition overall. tighter pins and almost no weld repairs evident. what i did find is the control valve has a bit of a leak between the end section on the right side ( when seated in the tractor facing forward ) and the first spool section. leak appears to weep from between the sections at the top. other issue i found was the one outrigger spool was stuck. with some oil and working it back n forth ( at first tapping it in and prying it back up before being able to connect it and use the lever). i was able to get it moving. it’s still not freely moving tho. it is tight and hard to move but will function the stabilizer. just wanted to see if anyone has any experience repairing these old valves and what if anything should i be aware of before i remove it and try and find the leak. also any tricks or things to watch for when a spool is stuck/hard to move and attempting to free it up. i know they are precision fit and maybe it’s not going to free up any better. seems to work just hard to move the valve spool and makes it hard to smoothly operate the one leg. often sticking and causing the leg to go more than i wanted and then again the other direction until i get it back to the neutral position just as the leg is where i want it. kinda annoying sometimes lol. if i’m going to remove and open up this old valve should i plan to just rebuild the whole thing ? or are parts hard to find possibly ? it’s a different valve than the original hoe had so i can’t use parts from it. had considered swapping the valves but it also leaks from the bottom ends of a few of the spools so either way i’m going to have to reseal a bank of spools. thought maybe someone here might have some tips or advise on this. thanks in advance. also i will upload some pics of each of the valves to help identify them and so someone might know better what i’m working on.
Are you sure it isn't the linkage that is binding ? There should be a tag on the control tower with the model number of the backhoe on it. Probably four O rings in each joint of the stack of valves. They have a square profile unlike a hardware store O ring. ALL of the seals and O rings will be quite expensive to purchase.
i had to take the linkage off to get it moving at the beginning. felt like i would bend or break the linkage so i removed it and used a brass hammer and tapped it in and then used a pry bar and the pin thru the hole to pry it back up. was able to get it moving but i wouldn’t say freely. it’s stiff and jumpy in movement. sticks where u leave it and does not return to cent. u can feel the “loose” spot in the middle that would be center but it’s still quite “sticky” feeling. i can see the tag on the side of the valve. i will get the numbers off it and hopefully there’s a schematic available so i can study how it’s sealed and order the appropriate seals. i did know they use special “x rings” and not just normal o rings. the main leak seems to come from between the end cap and the spools. by end section it’s the part that caps the end of the spool bank and has the large hose connection port. i will try and get some pics and part numbers when it stops raining. thanks for the reply tinkerer.
The part # on the valve won't be much help because they are usually put there by the mfr that made the valve. CNH has their own proprietary pat numbers for them. From the leak you described you will need to reseal the spool. The spring that is in the cap may be your problem.
