hi guys need a bit of help , we have a case 580k backhoe it hasnt been going for about 5 yrs or so , little bit hard on the eyes to look at . i want to get it started and tidy her up a bit , as far as i know water got into the air breather and may the engine over the few winters. could someone give me a bit of advice on where to start. dont want to do any harm before i try and start it . father said it was always very difficult to start at the best of times in the mornings anyway . where do i start first ? what type of engine is in the 580k thanks for all the help lads

    In the US it was cummins for the K series, 4t-390 or 4-390. I am not sure if the machines in Ireland used those or something else. If the unit has had a long history of hard starts and issues I would pull the injectors, put in some marvel oil and let it set for a few days, and try to get it to free up by hand, would not use the starter motor for this. Loosen the drain plug and see how much water is in the oil also. You may also need to pull the head and pan and remove those that are not stuck and deal with the ones that had a valve open and the head that had valves shut and filled with water. The freeze issue is the $100.00 dollar question with the cylinder bores and head, could have major issues or none to speak of. I would not turn it over until it had a means to expel fluid in the bores for sure.

    Well I drained the oil out and got 3 or 4 litres of water out .
