Case 580M, engine makes oil.

Hi everyone! Long time no see Got an interesting thing here. Two 580Ms. Customer is hell bend that he has fuel going in to engine. First showed up - engine oil looks like it was just changed, customer says oil was changed 2 months ago. Doesn’t smell like anything, not even like diesel engine oil - just like the ambient air, no smell to it at all, of anything. That one he took away fast, because he needed it. Brought me another “M”, oil looks normal, black, smells like diesel engine oil ( no diesel fuel smell to it), right consistency, everything seems like it is supposed to be - just a level is about 2 1/2 times, and you can see it was leaking out of the dipstick! Customer swears that he didn’t overfill. Saying sometimes when working hard, rpm doesn’t return to idle, and starts smoking black. On this one though, input shaft of the transmission is leaking, I drained oil out of the bell housing, some came out, but not enough to reach rear main. Although it was sitting overnight. He runs “universal tractor oil” in that transmission, which has a distinctive smell, but I can’t smell it in the engine oil. Any ideas, anyone?

Yep, he overfilled that one and blew a seal out the ass end. Tell him to lay off the spiced eggnog.

A simple way to see if fuel is in the oil is to pull the dipstick & place a drop of oil onto a paper towel & watch what happens. If there is fuel in the oil, the fuel will draw into the towel quicker. The fuel will create a circle around the drop of oil. If there is no fuel in the oil, the oil will soak into the towel, without any noticable colour change. Either way, drop the old oil out, fill to level & monitor what is happening.
