Case 580SL2 tranny problem

1998 Case 580 Super L series 2 with 2800 hrs on it and the machine is almost like a slug. It doesnt want to move like it should. When you put it in gear to go forward it doesnt even start to move like it did before. We even put the out riggers down and put it in gear to see if it would go with no weight on the wheels but nothing until you almost get to full throttle. It just doesnt have hardly any power to the wheels. We checked the trans fluid and it was only like a quart low. We called the dealer and they said there could be a couple diffrent things wrong with it, but we would either have to take it to the shop or have service guy come out. Do you guys think changing the trans filter would make any diffrence? Other wise i think we are going to take it in to the shop and just have them look at it. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

well I would do anything that is simple first that would be a cheap start to find the problem . changing fluid and filter would have to be done anyways better you do it than the dealer . . they do have scmtics on there site maybe if you can trace it out you might be able to figure it out . probably something electronic .

Yeah i think were going to change the fluid and filter tomorrow and try that. We have a parts book and looked in there but it doesnt really show too much, but it does show some kind of kit that is only on the 4x4 models that looks like it goes inside the filter but im not sure what it is. This machine worked fine saturday when it was parked and was like this first thing this morning.

The 95' L's had a bad front pump. A friend of ours had one go on his and the only way it would move was full throttle and it slugged. Never had any tranny issues with our series 2. Try the filter. Is the temp gauge heating up at all? I know in the ops. manual is said if it ever over heated on the gauge to put the trans in neutral and run the motor ful rev and supposebly it would help clear a clogged filter.

O ya, check the fuse panel under the loader lever. The forward/reverse fuse use to pop out on another friends Super L. Never did it on ours, but check that, it might be your problem........

Drain the oil and pull off out the suction strainer and look for debris. If the charge pump os failing you should find debris in the strainer or in the housing around the strainer. If that is ok alot of times the snap ring on the regulated pressure valve in the control valve will break and parts of it will stick the regulator valv partly open. Usually if you have to give it more throttle to get it to move it is the snap ring problem. They have a new style snap ring and valve repair kit that holds up better but you need the installer to get the new snap ring into the valve housing without a few hours of cussing, pinched fingers and possible damage to the valve bore

tc possible Check the "stall speed" of the torque converter. Put the tranny in high gear, lock the brakes and give full throttle. If the rpms stay extremely low the sprag clutch in the converter may have failed. The stall speed on the tach should be over 2000 rpm. it will sound like the engine is laboring and the rpms will not come up if the sprag has failed. Also check hydraulic stall by holding a hydraulic function against a stop such as boom up , dipper in, etc, again the rpm should be over 2000 rpm. If both are lower the engine could be low in power. This info is over and above the other gentelman who is accurate in his description of the broken snap ring in the modulation plunger bore of the PS control valve. A bad pump is a possibility but rare, if suspected remove the tranny filter, cut it apart and it will be full of debris out of the pump as the oil from the pump goes straight there. Keep us posted. I'll let your know what happens. We checked the fuse and nothing was out. So we just ended up taking it to the dealer rather then messing with it. Ill let you know what they find out.
