Case 60XT … engine quit, will crank, no start

Hi everyone ... I have a friends Case 60XT on borrow that has suddenly quit. It's as if the key was turned off. Plenty of fuel in the tank, all lights seem ok, will easily crank but won't start. Had a neighbour (ex-diesel mechanic) have a quick look and we bled the fuel system at the injectors. No real pressure, so problem appears upstream. Perhaps the fuel shutoff solenoid? How do I access and test the solenoid? Or a fuse/relay? (relay box is completely full of crap, so will clean this out) Any other ideas for simple diagnostics? Thanks, peter

Peter, could be faulty relay, but you have to check fuel shut off solonoid before you do anything - as that is the most likely problem - could be as simple as wire coming off the solonoid. Biggest problem is getting to it........ you need to raise the loader frame in order to tilt the cab. Have you got something on site to do that?

Thanks arlman. I ran a wire directly from the battery to the solenoid and found that it was working ok (click, click, click). Leaving the wire attached I was then able to start the machine with no problems. Yippee! No joy however with reconnecting the solenoid and trying a restart. So the problem is somewhere in the energizing of the solenoid. Is there a relay or fuse that controls this solenoid? Is it the "engine shutdown" relay (part #22 on page 04-13 of the online parts catalog). Thanks, peter

Relay could be the problem - but unlikely. Try swapping them around. Are 3 green lights on at dash? This is safety interlock, there is a switch in the seat that often is a problem - by-pass it at the plug near the seat (join wires at harness end of plug) Does it have an air cab? There is a switch on the door also.

Check the fuses for the interlock and the relay for the interlock. Also check the auxillary pedal. There is a switch that keeps the engine from starting if the pedal is stroked and will shut the engine off if the valve is stroked with the lapbar in the raised position.

Problem solved! Pulled out the relays and gave everything a good clean. Reinstalled (swapped around) and everything runs (and stops) OK. Thanks all for the advice. Most Helpful! cheers, peter
