I have a well maintained 1998 Case 821b wheel loader and the trans is stuck in 2nd gear. Dealer tells me I need a new trans. Any input would be appreciated
Does it only have 2nd gear in forward and reverse, or is there more gears in reverse? Is first gear there? Its not likely that the transmission has failed, sounds more like faulty controller or shift solenoids. Usually the transmission only fails one clutch, and it will only loose a few gears. Check your grounds, at the right rear corner under the cab. Also check the connectors under the cab, sometimes they get corroded, or get water in them.
