My old boss has a Case 580 super l 1996? The problem he is having is that the front engine mount/pump mount bracket is shearing the bolts on the engine block. When this happens the engine and pump become misaligned and he ends up ruining the splines on the input of the pump. Has anyone experienced this before? He has already changed the rubber isolators on the mount and it has happened twice more. The case dealer said its a crank problem, but the motor should have failed by now. He's a small contractor with only this one backhoe and the downtime is killing him. Thanks. AK
It is not a crankshaft problem. We have had about 6 machines do this in the last 3 years. If you catch it early the first time it happens it can be repaired with a new front support, dowels and mounting hardware. after it is ran awhile with broken bolts the block area where the front support mounts to the block is usually damaged and the dowel holes are egg shaped and will not hold together will all the new parts you can throw on it unless you replace the block and support as a set. How many hours does the machine have and is it roaded alot?
I think it has about 9000 hrs on it. It is on the road all the time, he works in a 10 - 15 mile radius and it is always driven on the pave to the job sites and home to the shop every night. He is very busy with this machine and he prob puts 10- 30 miles a day on the pave, he's by far the busiest backhoe contractor in the area. Thanks, I'll pass on the info. AK
All of the machines we have had this problem with have been high houred machines (7500 hrs or more) and got roaded alot. We did a dealer survey and Case did also after we had about 4 of these types of failures and found a couple of handfuls of this same failure and all had about the same kind of use and hours. We have tried everything to solve the problem including replacing the bolts with rolled thread studs and still had the repeat problems until we replaced the engine and front support.
Thanks for the info Goose. He's going to take it apart and check the mount and block holes. He has to change the oil cooler anyway. I remember one of the dowels was worn pretty bad when I was there. The mount itself is only about $300 cdn. He keeps checking it often and has broken the top 2 bolts again at least 1 time. AK
Well, the engine mount was good, but the engine block holes were egg shaped. Had some dowels made to fit and put some kind of high tech filler to make them snug. Had to make a special tool to drive them into the block. Put higher stength bolts in. It's been 2 weeks and so far so good. But he has been looking at the new 580M series. Probably a super m, but looking at super m+ also. Goose what are your thoughts on these 2 machines, any problems? What are the differences? Price range? Is the super m+ that much better than the super m? He wants at least 90hp, 4x4, extend a hoe, 2 levers not 4, larger bucket for some snow removal and it's roaded quite a bit. How are the 590s? Are they much more in price? Are they that much larger? Sorry for all the ? Thanks Shawn
If you can, steer him toward an M series 2. The hydraulic pump is driven off of the transmission eliminating the front support problems and the hassle of changing the fanbelt. Plus you can get pilot controls on the series 2 if that type of controls intrest him at all. As far as the M+ machines they are not very popular in my area. The M+ getsa you a wider machine and front bucket and taller front tires and a little wider cab. Th 590 machine are more popular in my area and everyone says they are a horse. As far as prices I dont get into that side of it much to be able to give any good ideas.
It seems all the new ones on the case site are series 3, and they too have the pumps driven off the tranny. What's the diff betwen series 2 and 3? Thanks Shawn
The main thing the series 3 have over the series 2 is the electronic engine and all the changes that come along with that. Also if it is a 580M+ or a 590SM+ they have variable displacment hydraulic pumps on the series 3 machines
Well he's been looking for a replacement machine for a while, found none he likes. So he decided to put some $ in the old girl. I found him a rebuilt longblock from Component Services Inc out of IN. for $3000 + $400 shipping USD (about $4000 CAN). The local Case dealer wanted $7800 CAN plus taxes etc for the same thing! So he's pretty happy about that. Got a new cradle/mount and all hardware too. Putting it together as I speak. Does anyone know where to get some used or new door frames and hood parts(something fell on it). Thanks Goose for the info. The thing failed about 4 times before he decided what to do, but I think this is gonna cure the problems. The motor was getting weak this last year anyway and while switching components from the old engine to the new one they found lots of blowby (I think 11000hrs on engine). I told him for all the $ I'm saving him that I don't want to hear no more bitching when I need a favor, and free snow plowing for life LOL. I don't think I'll get either! Shawn
Try Component Services or Terry at Hagan tractor in Oklahoma.
I miss the rocket ship L's......Any pictures of the old girl?
