The transmission is a 2000 series TT Allison with 2 forward and 1 reverse. It has very little power in first gear and will not go anywhere when shifted into high. I put in a new oil filter with no change in performance and then drained the oil out of the Transmission and found a bunch of little flecks of steel on the screen and in the bottom of the housing. The question is...now what? I talked with a mechanic on the phone and he said it was probably the (spray clutch) ? in the transmission and would have to be taken apart and fixed by a professional. He would not give me a price estimate on the repair depending upon what else might be wrong-which i can understand. My question is Do any of you have an idea as to what I might be getting myself into? The engine already had a bunch of money put into it and it runs great. I would just like to know what it might cost to fix the transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
W20 trans parts If you can get your parts through a Allison trans dealer you may save some dollars. Case prices on line, Gasket set $1,224.32 Free wheel clutch kit $945.00 Charge pump $1,115.00 Low range plate x 4 $272.45 each Low range plate x 4 $105.35 each high " " x 2 $177.76 each high " " x 1 need a sub # These are just some parts that may need changing out, bearings, converter, reverse plates and disc's, pistons, and so on. The cost can be more or less depending on how far you go with it. You need to find a parts and service book for your TT trans to help you with this. I would first clean out under the brake pedals for dirt/rocks to make sure it's not sending air to the clutch cut out. Then unhook the air line to the trans clutch cut out and see if it has air pressure on it flowing with out the brake pedals applied. Screw out the clutch valve from the control valve, clean the piston and spool in it, may have oil/water/crap in it and recheck. Check the trimmer circuit in the trans control valve, check trans pressures. Bleed the air tanks also to check for oil and water if not done also. It may be a freewheel clutch that is bad, but I would do some of these checks also before you commit to pulling it out. You will drop several grand in it with labor and parts, is it a 20/ 20B/ 20C machine and how many hrs do you think it has.
Common for these to cough a sprag clutch( free wheeling clutch) usually no other damage to transmission if unit was not run long after it had decrease in power., but still a labor intense job to remove tranny and tear down. If you kept running see above post, could be quite costly.
what model w20 w20b w20c I have remove engine, when disassemble convertor and then remove front cover to get to sprag. but you can go into trans, with mag.,with screen remove and find rollers from sprag when bad. Want is your clutch pressure gauge in dash showing???
