Hey I am looking at a cat 12E that has a newer rebuild and a newly replaced starter motor any info on what else to look for or possible problems with this machine would be great! The owner is asking $4500 which seems like a fair price. Thanks in advance!
Gday kmickels, the old girls are a good reliable machine. Check the wheels where they fit onto the shaft coming out of the chain box, as it is tapered, and if it has been ran with it loose it is a bit of a headache to fix cheaply. Grab the blade lift levers and see when you lift that they dont beat the crap out of you when you stop lifting. Depending if it has hydraulic slide shift on the blade listen to the pump, some had vickers vane pumps and when well worn get a chatter up on the vanes and make a growl. Make sure it has had a good coolant and keep it up for obvios reasons. It probably is well worn cos of the age but check the chain boxes to make sure that they stand true relative to the machine and that they dont leak too much oil. hope you do OK with it if you buy it. Cheers .
That seems like a heck of a price for a 12E. If it is a good straight machine GRAB IT QUICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are an incredibly reliable machine. We have had ours for more than 40 years and it's still going. Good price, especially with a cab if in good shape. Keep in mind that repairs can be megadollars.
If its a D333 pretty sure thats the cost of the rebuild alone
Great! thanks for the responses! I will hopefully be able to check it out this week, i have a couple of pictures i will try to post and hopefully it is the same machine the guy didnt realy know much about it he got it from a family member that passed away along with a bunch of other equipment at a local rock quary and they are getting rid of everything.
I'm thinking it looks to be a bit older than the E series...maybe the 8T or 70D serial number series..the scarifier is a plus...still a fair number of parts available, on the used market if nothing else. Rubber looks good in the pics...cabs are always nice. Good luck if you decide to pursue it. Alan
Looks to me like a 70D. For sure not an E series. 70D were a good machine too. Looks like it still has the pony motor on it. If they work they are great. If not, welllllllllllllll that is another thing.
Good old girls looks like 9k series go for another 50 years made to last don't rely on modern techs to keep that diesel running smooth they just don't know and have forgotten how sweet those old girls can run there what I call "PRECISION" motors we had one years ago lent it out on hire came back with the tandem and transmission smashed shes molten metal now ( not my fault i wanted to fix her up but finances stopped that ) also see if you can get your hands on a good power steering outfit for her it makes a hell of a difference mate there a good tractor slow precise and powerful 4 there day and think about this here sisters helped win the 2nd world war top machines ( Put one of these so called Operators on one nowadays for a week it would stuffem ( sort out the men from the boys)) this is the type of Machine i learnt on we pulled them to bitts we put em back together and they would work and work hard ... hahaha anyway ( What was that Story About the Hair @ the Tourtice ? ) Glenno from AUSSIE.
error 19k series forget long time ago and all the books are gone anyway
