Cat 235 Ex. replacing seals in brakes

Hello guys, We have an older 235 cat excavator and we need to put new seals in the brakes as the poplet is opening up. When we begin to disconnect the hoses it seems like the entire hydraulic tank, which sits much higher, wants to empty. Does anyone know if there is a some sort of turn off mechanism or is the game to disconnect and quickly cap or plug the hoses until the brakes are ready to be reinstalled? I expected a certain amount of leakage but it seems to not stop. Any guidance would be appreciated. Mark

Sorry for the double photo post. Not too sure how to delete the second set.

Mark in the Center of the Universe. Move up towards the hyd tank and and locate the case drain line going to the filter on the rear of the tank. Let pressure out of the tank, then loosen the line at the filter coming from the swivel. Then when you take the lin off of the motor it will drain out and stop. Need to drop the guard to remove the motor and get brake off. Check the brake housing and will likely find bore dammage where the piston seal rides. Fix that or the seals will not last. Later Bob

Hmm, looks very familer, I started the same project this afternoon. I have oil leaking out from the by the large nut that keeps the sprocket on, so I am thinking/hopeing that it is the travel motor seal that is out of it, as it leaks oil when it is sitting and the final drive is always over full. So I have the seals and am going to pull the motor and put them in tomarrow, had to get a plug for that case drain line too.

Thanks Bob. Releasing the hydraulic tank pressure did the job. We plugged each line as we took it off and not that much oil came out. Your post was immensely helpful. Ror76A - hope all went well with your Ex. today.
