A friend just purchased a 2006 Cat 236 with about 1100 hours and appears to be in very good shape. It has a mitsubishi engine and it sounds like it's starving for fuel after running at high rpm for about 5 to 10 seconds. It runs fine at low and mid range RPM, but when revved up for a few seconds it sounds like it gets a little quieter and then starts missing and puffing a bit of fuel smoke (looks like only a couple cylinders) and drops in RPM and runs rough…….like it's starving for fuel. The fuel filter has been replaced, and the electric lift pump on top of the filter housing appears to be working…..it puts out approx 4.5 psi when turning the engine over. When disconnecting the fuel line from the filter housing and blowing back into the tank with an air line it doesn't seem to be restrictive or blocked. Any other ideas for things to check or common problems on these 236's?
That pressure on the lift pump sounds a bit on the low side. From previous threads regarding Cat SSL fuel issues the pump is a weak link. I can't lay my hands on any numbers for what the pressure should be.
Did you check the flow the fuel pump is putting out or only the pressure, unhook a hose after the electric pump put a catch container under the hose and see how much fuel is coming through and for how long. Could be something simple like a clogged tank vent. Steve
The Standyne FM100 pumps can come with an 8,10 or 17psi regulator (they do offer non regulated as well). It is not adjustable. Flow is from 40-80gph depending on pump specified. I do not know which one cat spec's
Found the problem…… on the inside of the fuel filter housing there was debris blocking the inlet fuel passages where it makes a 90 degree bend and flows down to the filter. Took the housing off the machine and cleaned it out and it runs well.
