Cat 252B2 Changed Fuel Filter, How To Prime?

D3DaveC · 2014-01-24 20:15

I changed the fuel filter on my Cat 252B2 and according to the manual there is a primer pump on top of the filter housing but on this one there is some gizmo with wires going to it. Manual also says there is an inline filter. Lifted the cab, checked all over but no primer pump or inline filter. How do I prime it? Keep turning the engine over until it hopefully starts? Thanks

It should be electric prime, just turn the ignition key on to ignition, position before start. May have to have the safety bar down, then you should hear the priming pump on top of the filter whizzing away. Let this run for a minute or so then fire it up!

That black thing with wires on top of the fuel filter water separator is an electric fuel pump. The pump should hum for a few seconds after you turn the key on.

Turn the key to CRANK, without sitting on the seat, then leave in RUN. The pump is activated by the crank position.

If air enters the fuel system, the air must be purged before the engine can be started. Air can enter the fuel system when the following events occur: •The fuel tank is empty or the tank has been partially drained during normal operation. •The low pressure fuel lines are disconnected. •A leak exists in the low pressure fuel system during engine operation. •The fuel filter or the fuel pump is replaced. •The high pressure fuel lines are disconnected. Use the following procedure in order to remove air from the fuel system: 1.Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for three minutes in order to energize the electric fuel transfer pump. Do not start the engine. 2.Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- View Image -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Illustration 1 g01358092 (1) Connections for the high pressure fuel lines 3.Loosen the connections for the high pressure fuel lines (1) . 4.Operate the electric starting motor until fuel that is free of air comes from the connections. 5.Tighten the connections for the high pressure fuel lines. Refer to Specifications, "Fuel Injection lines" for the correct torque. 6.Start the engine and check for leaks.

I've got a 248B, and, I can assure you that the pump is triggered by momentarily activating the CRANK position on the ignition switch. It latches on when you return the key to RUN. If you're on the seat with the bar down when hitting CRANK, it'll start on the fuel that didn't drain during the filter change, followed by stalling from the air in the system. If you're OFF the seat, it'll simply activate the pump. The owner's manual and service manual are dead WRONG.

I thought I should also fill the fuel filter with diesel so it doesn't take as long to fill. Thanks everyone!

    Please, DON'T prefill the filter.

    Okay, no prefill. But why?

While it probably won't harm your skidsteer, it is an unacceptable practice when dealing with high pressure injected engines (heui) because any contaminants can harm the system. So, it is best to NEVER prefill a fuel filter. Besides, your system is automatic, so you're not even saving labor.

As above. It is never good practice to prefill a fuel filter. The fuel flow through the filter is from the outside to the inside, therefore whatever you fill into the filter is NOT filtered before it arrives at some very expensive precision-manufactured fuel injection components. As above, you have an electric priming pump. It's not even worth the bother. Let the pump run for a while to fill the filter then you're good to go.

Without getting into the machine I turned the key to crank position and let it return to run, then could hear the pump start. It filled the filter and that was it. The reason I changed it was the engine would lose power and start to smoke, then come back to normal, work for awhile then act up again. It was very cold when this happened both time, -34/-40. I think the best fix for this problem is stay home when it's this cold. Thanks for info!

do not prefill. On our newer Cat's the pump runs momentarily in the run position, I just do that a couple times and its good.
