Cat 259D Skidsteer – Beyond Max RPM Run Away

MGM · 2025-05-05 13:19

Caterpillar 259D Reved up beyond max RPM - Run Away and would not turn off with ignition. Killed the air supply to stop. Anyone have suggestions on what may cause this and how to resolve it? Thank you in advance for your time. Michael

Can you post a Serial Number and give a bit more detail about the circumstances of exactly what happened for engine to overspeed. Also does your machine have the type of display that enables you to see what Diagnostic Codes were created during the event.?

Check your oil.. If it’s overfilled by a lot, u might have been running on oil.

I recently traded a trailer for the skid steer. Everything looked good and it ran perfect. It did have a new instrument manel installed before the trade but everything worked great. Used it for about 1.5 hours and most of that was idling. Started it and let it idle so it could be moved, then out of no where it started going higher and higher on RPMs. No smoke. It got so high, we placed a t-shirt in the air intake to get it to turn off as the ignition key did not turn it off. Oil level is right under full mark. Here is a photo of the serial # and the instrument panel. Found Diagnostics but says "No Events" but did have these attached codes. I did see a caution message "Low System Voltage. Check battery or alternator". Previous owner stated they both were replaced not long ago. Looks like battery is Jan 2025 but could be a lemon. Seems to crank fine, but I'll put a meter on it. Researching it further as I get these items for you, it looks like a low battery may affect throttle or a sensor. Let me know what you think and thanks again for your help.

So the Diagnostic Codes on the screen are: - 190-0 - Engine Overspeed, indicating engine speed at 3500 RPM or greater. 523523-4 - Engine Injector Cylinder #2 and Cylinder #3 : Voltage Below Normal. Troubleshooting is Injector Solenoid Test. 523603-15 - Engine Coolant Temperature : High 110-4 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, Voltage below normal. Troubleshooting attached. I see nothing there to indicate what caused the engine overspeed, unless it is possibly related to the injectors not cutting off fuel when called upon to do so. The 110-4 & 523603-15 may be related. The latter could be a phantom result of the coolant temp sensor problem.

Hi Nige, The Advanced Display was just recently replaced when we got the machine. Do you think that could have something to do with it when it was wired in by Holt? "Low System Voltage. Check battery or alternator" What were your thoughts on the Battery perhaps causing issue? We are going to do the injector solenoid test. Do you happen to have complete electrical schematic for the machine? Thanks again for your help. Michael

I do. Check your message inbox. The E875-2 Event only comes when the engine is running so in theory could not have been caused by repair work. Below the activation/deactivation threshold definitions. If the Event is historical then it could refer to something that took place before the battery was replaced. Activates when the engine is running and battery voltage is 12.25 VDC for 2 seconds. Compare that to E875-1 Activates when the engine is not running and battery voltage is 10 VDC for 2 seconds. Also Activates when the engine is running and battery voltage is 13.0 VDC for 2 seconds.
