Cat 262c No Crank- blinking exclamation

TyZ · 2023-02-19 22:54

Cat 262c KMST 00782 bought at auction last year, used a few months on a clearing job. With storms coming put in shed, set for a couple of weeks. Went to start it, turned the key on and left display showed a flashing exclamation mark, no other symbol. Turned key to start position and nothing no fuel pump sound and no cranking. Checked fuses all were good both right and left displays seem to work tho. Orfered a manual online, with that in hand raised the cab and looking at all the wireing and connectors noticed that the ECM didnt match the one in the manual. I’ve looked at all the other posts and didn't find one with these circumstances so decided to try a new post. Perhaps the resolution of it will be of help to others as so many of the posts over the years have been a great help to me. Thoughts on how to diagnose this condition will be much appreciated.

You're going to have to get the codes and events read off it with a laptop unless you have the advanced display in that machine. That'll help point us in a direction to troubleshoot.

I’ll send you a correct electrical schematic. It should match up 100% with the wiring on your machine.

Is it possible to read the codes with the right side display? Its a 100 miles or more to a cat dealer.

Click on the link Chrisso posted above. Scroll down to Post #10. There is a pdf document there that shows the procedure. For a start come back with a list of the Codes/Events that are Active.

Thanks for that for the Operator Monitor instructions. went thru the procedures a few times and all I get is dashes, that the instructions indicate no fault codes stored if i'm reading the instructions correctly. is it possible that there are no codes or is it that the can buss is a problem?

Well if you've gone through all four service modes as described in that document, while the exclamation mark is flashing, you might have reached the diagnostic limitations of the C series monitor. Usually any time that light flashes something is active whether it be an event or diagnostic code. Events include low battery voltage, no engine speed, interlock active, park brake engaged, etc, etc. If nothing is showing active you're really stuck with just checking the basics (battery voltage, fuses, swapping relays, visually inspecting all wiring, switched power to the starter, etc). Failing that you'll need someone with a laptop with ET software. If you have the time you can go through and start bridging interlock switches (seat, LHS armrest and door) to try to identify the fault that way, all that info is in the schematic you have, but if time is money you're better off getting someone with a laptop.

I wouldn't jump to those conclusions yet. Loss of Cat Data Link signal will usually generate it's own active diagnostic code, which I'm sure you would see in one of those four service modes.

I can confirm that. A loss of communication will create some type of 0248 “Datalink not coming out to play” Code

Thanks for the advice, after going thru the schematic last night I decided to go thru all the wireing and put them in good order; It's a mess under that cab! The grounds are heavely rusted, found one wire broken at the connector and some wireing that's not factory. Has anyone had positive experience with any of the laptops with Cat ET that are sold on the net or is cat dealer the only source?

Have you checked the functionality of all the safety devices - lap bar, door switch, etc.? None of them would necessarily create a Diagnostic Code.
