Cat 289d torsion axles

Glenn440 · 2023-10-20 06:30

Bought a used 2016 289d - seems like a solid machine. On one axle on each side - one of the grease fittings won’t accept grease. Took zerk out and poked a wire in - doesn’t seem dried or caked grease. Are the pairs of zerks one greases front of axle and other greases back? Should have time to remove and inspect undercarriage this winter but wonder if one of the two accept grease and that zerk is well fed will grease make it back to the full length of the torsion axle?

I think there are 2 separate bushings in each axle tube. Each one has its own zerk. If it won’t take grease the bushing may have turned a bit or plugged right at the axle.

I’ve had new machines where one of each pair won’t accept grease. I think it’s how tthe weight sirs on the greaseway. Sometimes lifting the machine so the frames hang will allow the grease in. One machine, a 259, the one of each pair never took grease but putting plenty in the other one seemed to grease everything well enough. 3000 hrs so far Without issue.
