Cat 297C water valve problem

shawncam25 ยท 2020-04-28 21:28

Hello, I think the water valve on my 2007 297C quit working (blowing hot air all the time). part # 266-2432. I bought a new one at the Cat dealer and the part # was different 480-8589. The parts guy said the old part number defaulted to this new part number. Upon closer look the electrical connection was totally different . The old part number is unavailable. The parts guy at Cat had no idea what to do and offered me a new wiring harness for $360.00. I had already paid $212 for the part. Have any of you had this issue and is their a splice connector that will go from the old to the new.

480-8589 is the current replacement for 266-3432 wihch has been cancelled. The installation procedure is shown in the attached document. You will need a couple of electrical connectors, pins/sockets and a Deutsch Connector crimp tool. The parts required are listed in the document - probably $20 tops. Also note that the original replacement for 266-2432 was 328-3317. However 328-3317 has also been cancelled and replaced by 480-8589, so the document stil applies.

What is your machine Serial Number..? Also please post a photo of the 480-8589 that you bought that clearly shows the electrical connector on it, and also a photo of the electrical connector on the machine wiring harness that the water valve connects to.

The ser# GCP00606. I have attached a image of the new valve and a image of the old valve with the wiring connector I cut off

OK, first thing. The procedure in REHS4097 applies to your machine because it is listed as for GCP200-Up, or to put it more correctly GCP00200-Up. The three wires that you cut from the old water valve should be the following numbers. You'll find the number stamped on the outside of the insulation every 6" or so along its length. 124 Green 200 Black (it may have discoloured and now look grey-ish) A523 Purple (this is a thinner gauge wire than the other two) If those wire numbers & colours are correct then they are installed as follows in the connector. I suggest that instead of putting them in the connector you should first crimp the sockets on the three wires and plug them directly in the new water valve and test it. The pin numbers are marked on the body of the water valve, I can see them in your photo. If everything works correctly then the sockets can be installed in the connector and then install the wedge to hold them all in place. Wire 124 Green goes to Pin #1 Wire A523 Purple goes to Pin #2 Install a white plastic blank plug in Pin #3 Wire 200 Black goes to Pin #4 Below is the schematic showing the connections in one of the "new-style" 328-3317/480-8589 water valves.

The instructions Nige attached look to be what applies to your situation.

    Dang you're quick Nige!

Thanks. Those instructions are different than the service bulletin

Score 10 out of 10 for observation. I hadn't spotted that until I went back and read it carefully. Actually the illustration (see below) is correct, it's the text that is wrong. They got the green and purple wires in the wrong holes ......... Install the wire from the position A "GN" in the existing connector into the position 2 [Should be Pos 1] of the 155-2271 Connecting Plug Kit. Install the wire from the position C "BK" in the existing connector into the position 4 of the 155-2271 Connecting Plug Kit. Install the wire from the position D "PU" in the existing connector into the position 1 [Should be Pos 2] of the 155-2271 Connecting Plug Kit.

That is what's known in the trade as a Cat Design Feature - "designed to ***k you up"...............

Yes caterpillar took a 2 hour job and turned it into 2 days. Thanks for the help.

Cat299C JSP00547 I also have to replace my heater core valve assemble with the new part# 480-8589. The old part number was 266-2432. I just want to confirm the wire color/pin# to the new connector (155-2271) since there was some conflicting information in the service bulletin. Green ---> pin 1 Purple ---> pin 2 Plug -----> pin 3 Black -----> pin 4 Is this correct? Thanks

After all the brouhaha of wrong wire positions in the Special Instruction REHS4097 it appears as though Caterpillar corrected the error in version 07 of the document. Please see the attached. I have read through it and can confirm the instructions regarding which wire to connect into which connector pin location are correct this time.

Thank you Nige! Hopefully this will finally put my machine issues to bed.

No worries. At least you have the correct instructions now, although quite why you need heat in TX even at this time of the year beats me.

Valve is leaking and it does get cold here in the winter
