Cat 297D won’t start

Pete1468 · 2024-07-22 22:20

I was working the heck out of my 297D skid loader tonight and choked it off. Now it won't start back up. It has error code E459-2 on the screen, rolls over but wont start. Anyone have any ideas?

See this thread. HeavyEquipmentForums First thing I would suggest is to clean/re-tighten all the battery cables at both ends including the terminals on the master disconnect switch if it has one. Then do the same to the ground cable between the engine wiring harness and the cylinder block. Ensure that all grounds on the engine harness are secure and clean of debris. This includes grounds to frame and grounds to engine block. Refer to Illustration for block ground location. Ensure that engine harness is not burnt or show signs of obvious damage. If so, replace engine harness. Remove the connectors from the engine ECM to ensure that there are no bent pins. Also, ensure that the engine harness connector wires are not loose or disconnected from connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, Electrical Power Supply - Test for more information.

I found a blown fuse, I couldn't find a reason for it to blow and called the dealer to work on it. He unplugged both ecms and it still blows the fuse as soon as you try and start it. We can't find any rub marks that it's rubbed through anywhere. He's regrouping and coming out again tomorrow, hopefully with better luck.

It will likely be a failed engine wiring harness. It’s a common problem with those engines. There is one particular location where the harness is pulled tight on a 90-degree corner when it was installed to the engine and the wires fracture internally. Nothing will be obvious from the outside. Mention to the Cat guy that there might be information about it in a TIB or a Service Letter.

He found it, close to the alternator inside the loom. Didn't see any marks or rubs on the outside but at least he found it.

Got any photos of the location.?

These two wires had rubbed together and shorted out.

Are those two wires part of the engine harness or a branch of it.?

I believe it's a separate branch but not positive.

It certainly appears as though it is a branch of the harness. If you can find any reference numbers on any of the wires in your photo please post them. It may help to direct others to check that specific location in the future.

That red wire will likely chafe through again fairly quickly being held by that zip tie. May I suggest cutting the tie and putting some extra protection on these wires before securing once again.
