Hi all, serial is KCX00519. The stick cylinder started not holding pressure and was coming down when joystick was in neutral. After dismantling, see pictures attached, part of the snap ring between the cushion and the nut holding the piston was gone. The hydraulic shop told me it broke and pieces went and scrapped the inside of cylinder. So they remachined a new tube and put back the ends. Now came the time to put a new snap ring but everytime they stretched it to go over the cushion the snap ring bent. I went to Caterpillar and they told me there are 2 side by side snap rings there. Are we supposed to go over the cushion with the snap ring to put it in place ? or is it possible to put the snap rings in place and then put on the cushion ? Tks Richard
There are lots of possibilities for that stick cylinder. Was there a tag on the outside of the old barrel with a Part Number.? See attachment. It certainly appears as though the two snap rings Ref #8 are designed to be installed before the Stop #22. The order of assembly appears to be 2 x 8, 22, 4, and lastly the snap ring 16.
That's what I told the hydraulic person but he told me that was not possible ?! The other question is were there 2 snap rings before and if so, where is the 2nd one ? He already told me to look in the hydraulic tank for the small broken piece of the one we see on the picture. I suppose I should run a fish thru the cylinder lines.
It may not be easy to dig out Snap ring #16 but once it is out the Collar #4 and the Stop #22 should simply slide off giving full access to the two Snap rings behind the nut. It is difficult to tell from your photos but I get the impression that the Stop #22 is damaged. According to the parts illustration it should be parallel on the outside for most of its length but almost looks barrel-shaped like it's been beaten on.
