CAT 3114T Engine 80 HP year 1989 wants to stall after engine starts

Wondering if anyone here has ideas of what would cause the CAT 3114T engine to want to stall . Engine is in CAT wheel loader. I start the engine let it warm up a few minutes then put transmission into forward 1st gear, with in 50 feet the engine bogs down as if it was going to stall. The engine can run for one hour and some times it will do this again in either 1st or 2nd gear. Oil samples show nothing wrong with engine, just turned over to 7,000 hours. Transmission fluid sample shows no problem. Fuel filters changed. Air cleaner clean. When this happens if I step on the accelerator pedal to rev up the engine it does not rev up as one would expect so I take foot off and engine slows down then depress it again and work with it (while it still wants to bog down), after a few minutes problem does go a way and then some times it happens again. Any ideas of what is the cause?

Sounds like you might be pulling air... I would put a clear line between the pump and supply and look for air inundation. Regards Bob

Or sumthin floating around in the fuel tank...

Did you clean the prescreen water trap if it has one?

  4. #4lake side bob2018-04-01 19:36

I do not think it has one, I will look.

I don't follow what are you making reference to?

I have taken everything from a rag, to a soda bottle cap, to a piece of grade stake out of fuel tanks already. God only knows how they got in there when the snap rings and strainers were still in place.

If it's not air getting sucked in, then it's air getting in after the transfer pump so you might try the clear hose on the fuel return line if the supply looks clear with no air bubbles. Another test to narrow it down is to tee in a line to a pressure vacuum gauge in the cab to see what the pressure does when it bogs down. Assuming you're not getting black smoke or any smoke when it's failing to rev.

Some times foreign objects will get sucked up against the fuel strainer in the tank and cause loss off fuel flow and bogging at random times.Missed the part where you said it goes away.Sorry.Usually the suction will hold the offending material there until the engine is shut down so may not be your problem unless it recovers when load is decreased.

MAY BE some thing is wrong with the fuel injectors??? Any thoughts???

  10. #10Delmer2018-04-02 12:45

possibly one is sticking open letting compression pressure bleed back to the fuel line. The clear tubing is the easiest way to find out. Not that likely. What's the history on this thing? you getting any black smoke, or white smoke when it's bogging?

  11. #11lake side bob2018-04-02 16:56

No black smoke or white smoke. We do not rev the engine up much normally only about middle RPM range when working. Could water condensation in the fuel tank cause this, but it does not last it will stop acting up after a while then all of a sudden begin acting up.

Were you able to find the pre strainer be in a canister under the fuel primer pump Let us know what loader your working on

  13. #13lake side bob2018-04-02 17:23

Pre strainer screen. I will have to look in the books for the machine to locate it. I have looked in the at the location under the primer pump for a small screen in the fuel line it is not there.

  14. #14Delmer2018-04-02 17:41

Maybe, but the fuel filter would be full of water for it to happen. It would blow plenty of white smoke if it was water.

the loader is a CAT 910E model 19689 year with 6700 hours on engine and frame.

  16. #16lake side bob2018-04-02 17:44

The fuel filter had no water in it, that I could determine when it was changed out.

  17. #17lake side bob2018-04-02 17:45

    That is a 1989 year.

Number 25 is the the prescreen water separator its a washable filter if it hasn't been out you might be surprised whats in there 15/16 wrench on the top bolt to remove

  19. #19lake side bob2018-04-02 21:24

I have replaced that several years ago. I Will check it in the next couple of days..

  20. #20Nige2018-04-03 05:26

The screen #25 is washable. Unless it is damaged it should not require replacement. However if you are using the machine very little (and by the accumulated hours since new it sounds like it) you should really be removing that water separator every 3 months, 6 at the outside, to check for the presence of water. Machines that don't get used very often wll accumulate water through condensation in the tank. One way to reduce the chance is to always keep the tank full of fuel.

I have a 920 that had similar symptoms about a year ago. It has a newer style fuel cap on it and the vent on the cap was almost completely plugged off. It would start and idle just fine but would bog down after a minute or two of actually using the loader. Just my $.02

  22. #22lake side bob2018-04-10 17:25

I have checked this part numbered 25. I have changed it in the near past. It was clean LIKE NEW,there was no water so this can not be the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

  23. #23lake side bob2018-04-10 17:27

I also opened the fuel tank drain valve and drained out some fuel did not notice any water.

  24. #24Delmer2018-04-10 23:57

Follow the advice given. What's the history of the machine? how long owned? how long the problem's existed?

  25. #25Bluox2018-04-11 07:20

Check your fuel pressure at the port on the final fuel filter, at high idle should be 29 to 58 psi. If it isn't check the check valve in the fuel return line. Also there is a internal screen at the inlet on the fuel transfer pump. If all else fails go to your Cat dealer and ask them to print out the pages from systems operation testing and adjusting, they have actually seen one of these engines! Bob

3114.... sleeves in head allowing combustion into fuel. Ensure the water pump belt is tight as Usually it slacks off allowing engine temp to raise and affect sleeves. Clear tube on return line out Of head will be the go.
