Recently purchased a 315 DL. It has auxiliary lines and a foot pedal that I know runs a hammer. Seen it in action. The joysticks inside also have slide rockers and on the window glass has instructions on what each switch operates (shows operating a clamshell bucket, open/close and other is swivel L/R). I am installing a hydraulic thumb on the machine but can’t for the life of me figure out how to control the hydraulics with the slide rockers on the joystick. With no hammer attached I can hit the foot pedal and hear the pump whine in each direction. But can’t get anything from the joystick switches. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
Good day John Those slide rockers require proportional valve to operate the option lines it maybe you have the switch's but no proportional valves. The CAT guys subscribing on the forum should be able to point you in the correct direction. Kind regards Uffex
On most D series, you have to select a tool with 2way function. Can you get to the tool select menu in the monitor? How many lines for auxiliary? It definitely has two at approx 1" diameter for hammer. Does it have two more smaller lines, one on each side adjacent to the hammer lines? Oh, and a serial number please. Then we can verify what it was built with. When using a thumb, if you truly have 2way capable plumbing, you'll have to set the reliefs lower, so as not to buckle the thumb cylinder.
The usual question - do you have an Operation & Maintenance Manual for it..? That might help you figure out how to do what you want to. As HMC says, a Serial Number would be a great help to find information.
It does have options on the screen to select a tool but has only options of bucket/no tool and tool 1-10. There is no labeling of the settings for each just the generic tool 1, tool 2, and so on. Does Caterpillar have to program these along with flows for the specific tools that would be used? I have cycled through the list hoping one would accidentally work the slide switches but nothing. The only other lines that are are there supply the quick coupler. The return line for the hammer auxiliary does have a block valve before it goes back to valve body with a tee and another line going to valve body or possibly the tank, not sure. Serial KBD00222 Thanks Guys hope I can get this worked out sooner than later as I’m getting ready to have the thumb pinned on next week sometime.
Well a string of bad weather set me back a few days but now have everything pinned on and ready to weld the cylinder bracket for the thumb. In new info regarding the previous questions would be much appreciated.
To run a tool you make a tool program in the service menu, there you set max flow and pressure, rotating speed, select which thumbwheel control which valve, directions and so on. Usually there's a few basic standard tools already programmed by cat like hammer, grapple, thumb, crusher but it could be someone has deleted them in the past. The monitor can be used to make the settings if you log into service and then tool programming submenu.
Here is a video showing how to enter the service menu. Good Luck
