hey guys have a cat 3176 in a ford L9000 was driving down the highway today and the motor just cut out now it will crank but no start im trying to track down some wiring diagrams as im not getting any power to the cam timing sensor and not sure what wires to the ecu on the side of the motor are suppose to be any help or advice greatly appriciated 7LG21678 is the number on the motor

Alrighty peogress report Bad fuse not blown but pins corroded which seems to have sorted power issues The earth wire must ve broken somewhere but have run a earth wire to sort that short term while i try get it running Now have power to the timing sensor but still not running I Did have the sensor out and cant remember if i put it back in properly so will double check that tomorrow Other then that cant seem to find much else Only code i can get up is for the coolant temp sensor which it has always done that until the motor warms up abit

Is there a procedure to test the timing sensor with a multimeter? I would have thought that with power and earth plugged in to it and a led test light on the sensor wire that it would light up as i went past a bit of metal with the magnet? Or is this not correct ?

I believe you should see ac voltage while the engine is cranking

Yea okay Had it plugged into the harness and moved it past metal and couldnt get anything out of the sensor wire so i think ive had multiple issues that ive had to work through Now the fun part trying to source a new one going off cat parts online the timing sensor is a discontinued part

If this is your sensor arragnement (supposed to be correct by engine S/N) then it looks like #8 - P/N 102-9029. This is surperceded by 265-9034 which in turn services to 522-1642 according to what I see. Personally I would have thought an oscilloscope would be required to test the output signal.

Ideally an oscilloscope would be a better way to test it but if im correct in saying its a hall effect sensor it should show a signal voltage in my mind anyways could be wrong but the tacho had been playing up they last couple of times ive driven it There is hope yet for the parts to be avalible then

The only thing about that most people don't have a oscilloscope in their back pocket speed and timing sensors are the few things that are actually a input to the ecm other sensors are actually a return from a output from the ecm so if you are reading ac voltage from a timing or speed sensor you are probably good

Depending on what was used in that Ford for tach sensor, many operate on a sine wave, same with speedometer. Too much voltage from a slightly over charging alternator can cause erratic readings.

Yea okay havnt bothered checking the tacho sidr of it out just wanna get it running to get it back home
