Hi all. Machine has 3116 engine. Problems started with the throttle settings not responding immediately. Then became worse by suddenly dropping back to idle while working. Shortly after, the monitor stopped displaying anything . Finally, during swing cycle machine would brake and lock then randomly release and swing then as quickly stop again. Does this sound like a problem with the electronic control unit near the base of the operators seat ?
When an electrical problem comes and goes. It is usually due to a problem in the wiring rather than a computer or component issue. Since multiple problems that really aren't related are occurring, the first thing I would do is to check all of the ground connections. Actually take the various grounds loose at the frame and clean them. The "B" model Cat trackhoes are hard to diagnose because all checks are done through the monitor. A laptop can't be connected to it. If you still have problems after checking all grounds. You need to get an electrical schematic. Allot of guys here are kind enough to email them if you ask. Be sure to go along the whole harness because Cat is bad about having 2 or 3 ground wires come out of the harness where ever they feel like. All of those need to be checked. Also. Make sure its not something simple like low battery voltage caused by a broken alternator belt or failed alternator. Keep it simple until all the simple stuff has been checked.
