CAT 324D L- Hydraulic thumb problems

wfisher · 2022-10-31 17:03

Hey, now that I’ve got the hydraulic thumb working, I have another problem. This how has the CAT quick change bucket hydraulic system on it. Nice feature, but the thumb that’s on it looks like it should be for a wedge style bucket hookup. In the picture it will show that when the thumb closes it hits the front of where the front hookup is for the front pin. Since it hits the thumb won’t close all the way. It will take a lot of cutting on the thumb to get it to close, or find another thumb?? Or add a piece on the the end of the thumb to get it to fully close? Has anybody run into this before

Can't say I have. Looks like a parts mismatch somehow. To determine that we need machine s/n, hitch part number, thumb part number and bucket part number if still visible.

FYI it’s an aftermarket thumb - HeavyEquipmentForums

Not so fast, Nige. All the thumb, coupler, and bucket components are Caterpillar. Only the plumbing is aftermarket (HKX).

The thumb, coupler, and bucket will all have Caterpillar part numbers. See if they jive with the chart. Link to whole specalog https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...QQFnoECA4QAQ&usg=AOvVaw0LsmJotWznQlFbJPDHvLgk

That's an old style of thumb that reminds me of the wedge style quick couplers. Those old couplers allowed the bucket to be latched on at the same spacing as if they were pinned on and allowed room for that straight style thumb to full close on the bucket. I've never seen that type of tines on the end of the thumb. Those might be something that have been modified.
