Have a 3304 that has sat for several years. I can get it to fire with ether. Have fuel on low side of pump with hand primer. I am thinking pump is stuck closed and won't allow fuel through. How can I check pump to see if it's operating correctly?
Welcome FanninAggie. Post some serial numbers of your dozer and your engine (may be different). Pics of the side of the engine with close ups of the IP can help folks point you in the right direction. Sometimes there's random screens or lines plugged up. Personally, when I work on a system like this, I bypass all the low pressure fuel supply by using a garden sprayer. Buy a new one, unhook the hand valve on the hose, and add a barb fitting that screws into where ever your low pressure fuel ties into the injection pump. This way you know as a fact you're getting clean diesel at 10-20psi which completely eliminates (for now) the low pressure side being your issue. You can even add your favorite cleaner (B12, SeaFoam, DieselKleen, MMO, etc.) in the clean diesel. to help loosen gunk in the IP and injectors. Best of luck on it!
Loosen the connection AT THE INJ PUMP and work the hand primer.. if fuel squirts out, tighten it back up.. So now U KNOW fuel is making it TO THE PUMP INLET.. Now loosen or remove a line or two from the pump going TO THE INJECTORS..& crank the engine.. If no fuel squirts out of the pump.. the pumping plungers inside the pump are stuck and requires devine intervention..
No divine, man intervention is enough... Plunguers may just be glued in place due to sulphur in the fuel, or biodiesel goo. If plunguers do not squit not even a drop the best is to heat up the pump with a heat gun, being aware O rings inside, turn a couple of minutes and they should unlock. This heating cycle might release them. If not they have to come out. Problem is that it can not be done by unexperts as it may end up in the wrong place and pump sinc is lost. If plunguers are locked, injector nedle is probably too , cleaning would be the best , but as long as they don't leak , no problem will come from that just some white smoke.
Sorry, the 3304 is on a irrigation well not a dozer. i may have placed in wrong forum. either way, attached is some photos of the engine. i could not find a serial number plate on it.
i get fuel to pump with hand pump. i will need to check the fuel from pump to injectors. Does this pump need fuel pumped to it or will it draw fuel from tank.
Its just an engine... CAT's of that era need bleeding at injector lines. Also plunguer pumps do no suck fuel by their own, either that arangement has a lift pump or an electrical , or just is fueled by gravity. Best is to check all that, and before atempting to turn the engine diesel should be at pump main gallery. To start a litle brake cleaner will help.
Should be able to bleed fuel at loosened injector lines either at the fuel pump or at the nozzles by pumping the hand primer with the throttle lever in the shutoff position. Fuel probably won't come out with throttle in run position. The fuel transfer pump is a gear type which is under the hour meter on the side.
