Does anyone know how to go about troubleshooting no acceleration on this excavator? The speed dial shows from 1 to 10 when you turn up the speed but it just won't accelerate.

The engine control is completely electronic. You will need someone with ET to diagnose it. This machine must be virtually brand new and surely under warranty?

  2. #2rmllarue912019-10-23 08:06

Is this a b or c model? Did u try back up switches at back of armrest

  3. #3DEMLONE702019-10-23 10:49

    Serial number ?

  4. #4John C.2019-10-23 11:34

I sound like someone shifted the toggle switch to manual operation. There should be fault code alarms going off.

  5. #5Brian Bobb2019-10-27 19:13

We changed the ecu with the same results.

  6. #6Brian Bobb2019-10-27 19:13

Have not tried those as yet.

  7. #7John C.2019-10-28 00:22

I seem to recall there might have been a B but maybe not a C model. They are now a 349.

  8. #8Nige2019-10-28 05:46

The 345 was built as both B & C models John. C-model production appears to have ended somewhere around 2007-2008. SIS also lists a 345D model but it appears to have been a Japan-only machine, which of course could always end up somewhere else in the world as a grey market import.

  9. #9John C.2019-10-28 11:01

They weren't a popular machine around these parts. They didn't compete well against the Komatsu and Hitachi products.

  10. #10Brian Bobb2019-10-28 11:30

It is a 345BL with serial number 4SS01245. Tried the switch and it still will not accelerate. All of the fuses are good. What test I can carry out on manual toggle switch?

  11. #11Mobiltech2019-10-28 12:19

The backup switches bypass the ecm. If you switch to backup and then toggle up on the governor switch it should rev up even if the hyd ecm is dead. The engine is electronic so there is no throttle cables or actuator. You should probably go through monitor and check if the speed sensor on the engine is picking up and reading on monitor. The next thing to try would be a recalibration of the governor control. This can be done in service mode and will show a code if something’s wrong. Someone here will be able to post the procedure. I don’t have time to look it up now.

  12. #12DEMLONE702019-10-28 13:33

There is no governor control on this one

  13. #13Brian Bobb2019-10-28 15:34

Did the bypass but the monitor shuts off and it will not accelerate when the toggle switch is flipped up. I will try to go through the monitor to see if it is.

  14. #14DEMLONE702019-10-28 15:48

When u bypass its normal monitor shuts off

  15. #15Brian Bobb2019-10-28 15:53

Oh i thought something else was wrong when it did that. So what else could cause it not to accelerate even with the bypass? Oh the speed sensor was a new on...whenever you change a part, do you need to recalibrate the system?

  16. #16Mobiltech2019-10-28 18:21

How did you adjust the clearance on the sensor.

  17. #17Mobiltech2019-10-28 18:34

You can check engine speed on monitor in service mode. Start-Up Of The Service Mode View Image Illustration 2 g00662936 Electronic Monitor Panel (2) Character display (22) Travel alarm cancel switch (23) Boom priority mode switch (24) Swing priority mode switch (25) Fine control mode switch (26) User mode switch Note: The engine can be running or the engine can be stopped, when the "Service Mode" is started. When the engine is stopped, the starter switch must be in the ON position. You should know the procedure to start up the "Service Mode" in advance. The following switches should be depressed and held for 2 seconds or more simultaneously: travel alarm cancel switch (22), fine control mode switch (25) and user mode switch (26) . The time display and the dial display on the character display (2) will change to a "0" and a "0". The left character position will flash. You need to enter the following security code: OE 32 3A. Note: The security code must be entered within 10 seconds after the first procedure (1). Otherwise, the time display will return. You should learn the procedure of entering the security code in advance. The procedure to input information is listed: The figure that is blinking on the character display (2) can be changed. In order to change the figure, you should depress the boom priority mode switch (23) or the swing priority mode switch (24). The figure that is blinking increases (Boom priority mode switch (23) ) The figure that is blinking decreases (Swing priority mode switch (24) ) The character position that is blinking can be shifted by depressing the fine control mode switch (25) or the user mode switch (26). The character position that is blinking shifts to the right (Fine control mode switch (25) ). The character position that is blinking shifts to the left (User mode switch (26) ). After you enter the security code, the service mode is activated by depressing and holding the following switches for 2 seconds or greater: travel alarm cancel switch (22), fine control mode switch (25) and user mode switch (26). The service mode is automatically activated 10 seconds after the security code is entered. Now, the "Service Mode" is activated and the character display (2) will display "10" on the left two character positions and "1" on the right character position. Not sure if this works on yours but you can try. Comes up for 4ss serial number. When the controller is replaced or the controller is reinstalled, the governor must be calibrated. The hydraulic oil temperature must be at approximately 50 °C (122 °F). Enter service code 70. The character display shows "70 P00". This indicates that calibration has not started. Depress travel alarm cancel switch (22). The character display shows "70 PSP". This indicates that the governor has completed the preparation for calibration. Start the engine. Depress travel alarm cancel switch (22) in order to begin calibration. While the controller is calibrating, the character display will indicate progress.Table 1 Electronic Governor Calibration Calibration Code Description "70 P00" Prior to calibration "70 PSP" Ready to calibrate "7003" Determine the position of the governor actuator for high idle. "7005" Collect the position data for the governor actuator at engine speeds of 2000 RPM, 1500 RPM, and 1000 RPM. "7007" Collect the position data for the governor actuator at engine speeds of 1000 RPM, 1500 RPM, and 2000 RPM. "7009" Confirm the position of the governor actuator from the engine position 9 to position 1 on the engine speed dial. "7010" Confirm the position of the governor actuator from the engine position 2 to position 10 on the engine speed dial. "70 End" Complete When the calibration has been completed, the character display indicates "70 E nd". Note: Depress power mode switch (19) and travel alarm cancel switch (22) and hold the switches for a minimum of 2 seconds in order to stop calibrating. If the display contains the letter "H", there is an error. Depress travel alarm cancel switch (22). The code is indicated on the right three positions. Refer to 2. Table 2 Code Display Description 1 "70 HF 01" Engine stops 1 "70 HF 01" Engine stops 2 "70 HF 02" The engine speed sensor is not functioning correctly. 3 "70 HF 03" The engine is under load. 4 "70 HF 04" Faster than the high idle speed of the engine 5 "70 HF 05" Slower than the low idle speed of the engine 8 "70 HF 00" Excessive hysteresis Perform the following operations when character display indicates "70 Hd 00". Depress fine control mode switch (25) and hold the switch until the character display stops blinking. Depress boom priority mode switch (23) or swing priority mode switch (24) in order to select data for calibration. Depress boom priority mode switch (23) in order to select the previous calibration data. Depress swing priority mode switch (24) in order to select the default calibration data. Depress travel alarm cancel switch (22) in order to store the selected calibration data. If "70 End" and a number are flashed on the character display, the speed of the engine is below specifications. The second number that is flashed is the actual engine speed. This number is displayed in the four positions on the right side of the display.

Mr. Hystat put this together a while back. It shows you how to get into the service mode in a B model excavator. He also has one on the throttle control backup system.

  20. #20Brian Bobb2019-10-28 20:53

We just installed it the way we took the old one out.

  21. #21Brian Bobb2019-10-28 20:55

Thank you so much. I will try this tomorrow.

  22. #22Brian Bobb2019-10-28 20:56

Thank you so much for these videos. I will follow them tomorrow and see what happens.

  23. #23Mobiltech2019-10-29 08:08

Which engine speed sensor did you replace ? There is one in the flywheel that the hydraulic ecm uses. That one has to have clearance set.

  24. #24Brian Bobb2019-10-30 07:11

The one on the flywheel. A guy screwed it in fully and then backed it out a bit. What is the clearance for it?

  25. #25Mobiltech2019-10-30 08:09

If he backed it out 3/4 turn would be ok. You can view the output on the monitor in service mode.

  26. #26rmllarue912019-11-01 20:07

Switches on arm rest one puts it in bypass you have to work other the Rev it up each flip is 50 or 100 rpm

  27. #27rmllarue912019-11-01 20:14

It doesn't need bell housing sensor to Rev up.

  28. #28Oxbow2019-11-01 20:46

I have a 345DL, in the states. RAJ 00252. I haven't looked to see where it was made.

  29. #29rmllarue912019-11-01 20:53

My profile pic is a 345d in Pennsylvania

  30. #30Oxbow2019-11-01 20:58

So is mine, on our lowboy. Ours is a variable gauge track machine.

  31. #31Nige2019-11-02 06:49

It's strange, there is no information on the 345D in the resources I look at. The engine for RAJ00252 was built in Mossville so it stands to reason that the excavator would have come out of the Cat Aurora Plant.

  32. #32Oxbow2019-11-02 08:54

Interesting indeed. I use the customer (free) version of SIS and have looked up parts for it numerous times. Your resources are surely far more comprehensive than what I use.

  33. #33Nige2019-11-02 09:17

SIS gives the date of manufacture and the date of shipment of a particular machine, but not the build location. One of my other sources is engine details which is how I came up with the fact the engine was built in the Mossville plant. The Wheel Loader & Excavator assembly plant is at Aurora which is literally just down the road. The weird thing for me is that IronRecord contains no information whatsoever regarding the 345D.

  34. #34John C.2019-11-02 10:25

I finally woke up and thought about how to check this and opened my serial number program which lists the point of origin for each serial number. 345D machines were made in Japan, Belgium and the United States. Prefixes for US made machines are EEH, MLK, and YEE. The only Belgium serial number shows as KFH. All the rest were made in Japan.

  35. #35Oxbow2019-11-02 10:50

My machine is a 345DL VG. As Nige mentioned I do no see any origin through SIS, so out of curiosity I went back to my Performance Handbook #39 and looked it up. It shows the 345DL with fixed gauge as Japan and U.S. sourced. 345DL with variable gauge is U.S. sourced @ 108,610lbs., and Belgium sourced at 115,167 lbs. None of this matters, just satisfying my curiosity.

  36. #36Cmark2019-11-02 16:10

Look on the serial number tag on the RH base of the cab. It tells the country of manufacture.

  37. #37Oxbow2019-11-02 16:33

    I'll do that. Thanks.

  38. #38Jeremy Whittaker2022-10-28 14:31

I'm looking at purchasing one of these 345 BL and the throttle won't work as well as the display not turning on. The guy says sometimes it will turn on and then the throttle works fine. From what I'm reading on this forum it seems like this manual switch may have been activated or simply gone bad which would cause both of these issues. Is that a safe assumption? I've never bought one of these before and I'm just a bit nervous that I might be buying something that is going to cost me thousands more to fix. Appreciate any advice! Thanks!

  39. #39Nige2022-10-28 15:04

Best advice would be to get someone who knows what they’re looking at to inspect it for you. Too much at stake to get it wrong IMO.

  40. #40John C.2022-10-28 15:26

That model of machine was built from 1998 to 2000 according to my sources. It will be a black hole to suck money out of your wallet. Will you be mining gold with it?

  41. #41Jeremy Whittaker2022-10-28 17:57

I kinda thought these things ran forever. I'm totally new to this. So basically I'll be fixing it constantly?

  42. #42Jeremy Whittaker2022-10-28 18:20

Does cat do pre purchase inspections? Or where could I find a mechanic that knows these things? I'm in Arizona.

  43. #43Nige2022-10-28 18:32

Whoever bought it brand-new would have been fixing it constantly since the day it was put to work. In 20 years nothing will have changed. Yellow Iron breaks, it’s a fact of life. You could speak to Empire Service Department, I’m sure they would inspect it for a price. They might even be able to recommend a local independent mechanic who would do the same.
