390DL 198570lbs c18 engine 523hp max pressure 5080 max flow 378 max digging depth 38'7" max reach ground level 56' 6" max lift over front 60550 max lift over side 60550 DBP 132640

Looks pretty good for the most part. The much higher max pump flow will hopefully alleviate the big machine sluggishness in lighter digging. A bit more drawbar pull would have been nice - excavators always seem weak in the track motors, but it's still ahead of Deeretachi. Also, why so little lift capacity over front? Even though the machine is bigger than a 385C, the lift capacity is down ~7%? 60500 lbs over the side is impressive, and indicates a proper sized counterweight, but over the front, 70000 lbs would have been no problem balance wise. Perhaps should have put bigger boom cylinders - speed wouldn't have an issue when the pump has 35% more flow. On the other hand, the 390D (and much more so the 385C) is well ahead of the JD 850D (and Zaxis 850-3) in lift capacity. Technically, the 650D has a greater lift capacity than the 850D ! In real life though, the stability of the 850D of course gives it an edge over the 650 in heavy lifting.

Yeah I wonder if it'll be a "speedier" machine too, it's no secret Cat likes to "turn the machines down" the only time I was on a Cat excavator that could dig decently was a 320B where the engine and hydraulic pumps were "turned up" quite a bit.

    Heres a pic.

^^ I'm pretty sure thats a photoshop of the 385CL pic from the spec sheet

  6. #6sultan2010-09-03 17:36

Fake. Here's original from the brochure as cat 325ccr says. The engine compartment would have to be bigger to make room for the Tier 4 Emissions stuff.

HEX-330C (Hyd System is overheating) I just join with this forum, does any of you can give me a solution for my problems? My Excavator problems is: the hyd system is always overheating. The excavator is applied for Breaker.

    1. Did you have the excavators pressure and back pressure checked for the specific hammer?? 2. Is it even the right size hammer for your excavator?? 3. Are you using multigrade oil in a high ambient location?? 4. your not supposed to continuously hammer.

  9. #9djuniardop2010-09-08 15:19

    Over heating please advice...

  10. #10YELLOMTLMILITIA2010-09-08 16:38

Im having a hard time understanding what you mean??? Did you test for pressure with guages?? If your cooler is plugged with debris then you have bigger problems than overheating!! You need to have it sampled and kidney flushed. Those variable displacement axial piston pumps are very very susceptible to contamination. Plus the Hydraulic cooler is blocked off??? Im surprised it even works at this point

Who says the 390D will be Tier 4? Brochure is up on Cat's website now.

  12. #12sultan2010-09-23 20:35

I guess I was wrong... the new machine seems to look exactly the same as the old 385CL, so it seems that cat just photoshopped many old 385C photos in the brochure. Photoshopping marks are visible on some images. The weight hasn't really changed much, it's just 86 tonnes. Max hydraulic flow hasn't really changed either (the number yellowmilitia provided was main and swing combined). Seems to be a rather uninteresting update.

  13. #13sultan2010-09-24 16:32

Hmm... other spec sheets say its just over 90 tonnes. The lift capacity is up a bit over the 385C, and it is very well balanced with a proper counterweight unlike some other makes... They also eliminated the heavy lift mode and made regular mode heavy lift all the time.

I didn't mean to single you out -- sorry about the tone. Not intended to be snarky. Cat does the Photoshop thing a lot, so I agree with you there. Most of the time, the fonts they choose aren't even accurate, which is a dead giveaway immediately, too. And I *think* the 390D is a refresh of the 385C and less so a "remake" in the sense of the 345D vs 345C. If I remember correctly, the 385C was rarely sold as an 85-tonne machine (it tended to sell heavier), so there's a good possibility that Cat brought everything to be a D-series to test out a few small changes and then to prep for what must eventually be a rather significant E-series launch. Given that the 336E is already in prototype form, it would not surprise me if the E-series is the first T4i (interim) to market, and just like Deere did with the 744K T4i, Cat will probably hype up the E-series somewhat, too. The large D-series excavators are just to get the nomenclature and some other features ready for an E-series redo. That, of course, is my opinion... I have no knowledge of what Cat's working on. ()

From what I understand CAT isnt going to be required on tier4 interim to have a DPF on the higher hp rated C18s and above. They are supposed to only be required to have a DOC. Now when tier 4 final comes out that may all change. but right now the bigger TIER 3 ACERT engines are meeting thier particulate specs already just not hitting the NOx regs.

  16. #16sultan2010-10-01 11:54

Oh, thanks for letting me know. At least the big machines can escape tier 4 for now. I'm all for clean air, but the government's got their priorities messed up with the latest emissions regs. Tier 1 was a good standard, as it provided engines that produce next to no visible smoke (especially in constant speed engines like those in excavators) without needing much computers. Look at the emissions from the big ships and the oil extraction and refining process (especially in the tar sands) - they pollute over 10x more NOx, SO2 and other pollutants than all other land based diesels combined. Many big ships are still running fuel with up to 4% sulfur! They ought to reduce the emissions of the big polluters, not mess with struggling farmers and construction companies. Farmers can't afford to buy new equipment to keep up with regulations such as the ones they are trying to implement in California. I'd be in huge trouble if they banned tier 1 and 0 machines, because they make up the bulk of my (small) fleet and I can't afford to buy newer stuff. Not to mention the reduced reliability of more computer dependant machines. Message to governments around the world: if you want to reduce pollution, target the real polluters in the world, and don't screw over the farming, construction, and transportation industries to please scientifically clueless diesel-hating "environmentalists."

I saw one iin person I took a picture at the local cat dealer today pretty inpressive machine They left the key in it so I started it up an played with it for a bit I would love to run one on a job site Think it might be a bit bigger than the Deere 200clc that I am used to

  18. #18cutting edge2011-05-25 22:26

Can't wait to see the pissed off cat faces when the hideerechi 870g is released.

  19. #19rare ss2011-05-27 09:08

as well as the pissed off 390D owners

  20. #20vapor3002011-05-27 16:54

whats so great about the deere

  21. #21cutting edge2011-05-27 20:46

Word around the water cooler is that its gonna have more snort and even smoother hydraulics than the 850D has.....and the 390 is CAT's attempt to catch up to the 850. ....or so Ive been told by guys that had been running 385's and 850's on the same claim.

  22. #22plantman.uk2011-05-29 02:41

Just been looking at the *390*....apart from the decals it appears to be as the 385 that i'm on right now, strange you don't see the 2 side by side
