Cat 420D 4×4 not engaging

beamero · 2024-08-10 17:58

While using 4 wheel drive today, it acted like it was not wanting to disengage properly. Eventually lost the ability to engage and the light on the switch went out. Found a blown fuse (#7 transmission) and replaced. Flipped the switch, the light came on, then went out. Fuse blown again. Is the front wheel drive solenoid located on top of the transmission, accessed by removing floor plate? Would anyone happen to have a wiring diagram for the 4x4 system? Thanks so much! 2005 BLN11341

No it's on the side. See the attachment, ref #8. There are two identical parts numbers, one for the #1 speed clutch and the other for the AWD. You can identify which is which by matching the wire colours from the schematic I sent to you. Speed clutch #1 the wires in the machine harness side are grey & white, the AWD solenoid they are white & black.

Thanks for your help. So my machine had it on the left hand side, and there was only the 1 solenoid present. Unplugged it, and the all wheel drive light stays illuminated. Plugged up, it immediately blows the fuses. Wires do have damage where they go in to the solenoid body. I took the magnet off and can’t get it to engage when hooked directly to a 12v source. Guess it’s a bad solenoid.

Also appears to have previously been replaced with an aftermarket part.

Seems someone has checked it with a test light. You can always OHM it out.
