have a 2018 420f2 with some issues. hear are the codes showing The middle light is blinking and other 2 are solid. What is its major malfunction?
You got a serial number for this machine? And are those the only 3 codes you’ve got?
Yes only have 3 codes. Serial number HWC03815
1235-9 : J1939 Network #3 : Abnormal Update Rate The Pump and Electronics Unit (PEU), the ammonia sensor, the soot sensor, or a NOx sensor has incorrectly stopped or started transmitting a data request. The ECM will log the diagnostic code. 5246-16: Aftertreatment SCR Operator Inducement Severity : High - moderate severity (2) **this code is a direct result of the above 1235-9 code. 190-15: Level 1 The engine has exceeded the value that is programmed into the Electronic Control Module (ECM) for 0.6 seconds. There are no diagnostic trouble codes for the speed/timing sensors. The engine has been running for at least 3 seconds. I would say you are going to have to get CAT ET hooked to the machine to determine which sensor on the J1939 is causing the problem.
thanks ahart this machine has been nothing but trouble. started it up this morning and i put all the coolant on the ground pretty quick. turns out the dang def heater valve (all plastic mind you) hangs almost below the bottom of the frame. guess i hit it on something the day before and when it tried to warm the tank up it opened the valve letting all the coolant out.
I have a 2019 Caterpillar 420F2. I'm getting some trouble with the DEF system. I got a mechanic to run a diagnosis on it today. He told me that he got an error code, I didn't ask the code. He told me it meant that the module was getting a high voltage. Please help.
That was unfortunate because it's key for everything. You will have to go back to him and ask him exactly what Diagnostic Code Number it was. That doesn't help much because there are seven different models. We need the machine Serial Number.
CAT 420f2 IT SN HWD01655. This is what i got from the dealer: TROUBLESHOOT & REPAIR AFTERTREATEMENT SYSTEM (108U) NOTES: DEF DOSING FAULT CODES: 3361-5 (3821-5), 5246-15, & 5246-16 The machine isnt yet in derate, still allows you to operate normally however i deadlined it because i cant afford to have it get worse. i need to do everything i can to reduce the amount of cost for any field tech to come out so solving it myself is best. however theres so much information in the service manuals and im always pressed for time. any advice on how to trace the problem myself would be immensely helpful!
i just read elsewhere on here to ensure the water separator and fuel filter has been replaced. its been a year since it was last serviced. 2700 hours on the machine total.
Fuel filters are supposed to be replaced every 500 hours or every 6 months on machines that do not accumulate a large number of hours. It might pay you to start with that service work before moving forward.
3361-5/3821-5 (they are the same thing) - Catalyst Dosing Unit : Current Below Normal. The ECM detects a low current condition in the output from the DCU to the solenoid in the DEF injector. See the attachment. Hopefully @ahart will be able to give you some guidance regarding how to perform the testing procedure. Question: How old is the DEF fluid in the tank.? The two Codes below I would say are consequences of the first one. 5246-15 - Aftertreatment SCR Operator Inducement - least severe (1) 5246-16 - Aftertreatment SCR Operator Inducement - moderate severity (2)
This circuit is very sensitive on these machines. These DEF injectors can ohm in spec and still cause a code, I’ve seen it first hand. Even if everything tests good, change the injector.
Hi guys, replace the def injector. When you see a high code, it could be unplugged, but when you see the low code 90% of the time it is the def injector. The other 10% it’s the harness. When you remove the def injector look inside and see if there is crystallized def. If there is you will need to remove and clean it. With the def injector plug in with the two def lines and the electrical connector, run the def accuracy test. You should get a spray pattern in a cone pattern. You can pm me or hit me up on WhatsApp. It super annoying because most of the time it will not let you run any test because of the active codes.
WhatsApp me I can fix
WhatsApp me has nothing to do with def system, but the 4.4 engine HATES water and you will damage the fuel injectors. Replace both fuel filters and just prime the system by leaving the key in the on position for a minute or two until you hear the electric fuel pump turn off. Filters are cheap, engines aren’t.
