Cat 420IT Backhoe beeping

mmartin2721 · 2022-02-05 15:44

Hi, just joined the group. I have a 420 cat that just started beeping when put in forward or reverse. Fluid levels look good, no warning lights, just a fast steady beeping when put in forward or reverse. Also doesn't matter if it is gear or not. Its fine if in neutral on the F/N/R selector, but beeps like crazy in F or R. Looking for suggestions of what to check. Don't want to use as is, frightened something may give out and I'm 3 hours away from the nearest shop. Thanks for any help

First order of business, welcome to the group. Secondly- what’s the serial number on your machine? First thing that comes to mind is parking brake, what does indicator show?

Parking brake is off, no light showing it on either. Not sure of the number off hand. I'm going to go through the machine tomorrow morning in the light and try to give it a good look over.

Still not knowing serial number, looks as if your issue could possibly lie in the rear stabilizer system, this note is in the 420E HLS book. Note: The action alarm (if equipped) will sound when you raise one or both stabilizers in order to lower the machine to the ground and the transmission direction control lever is in the FORWARD position or in the REVERSE position.

    CRS16933

CRS is the engine serial number see below for your machine serial number.

Looks like there are switches on each of the levers for the stabilizers and a switch on the parking brake handle. Any of these can cause the alarm to activate when the FNR is placed in F or R if the switches are activated.
