cat 941 trans/bevel gear problem?

wlf89 ยท 2020-07-05 13:06

was piling up some brush today and the old 941 started not feeling right when moving, and thought i was hearing a new noise. started going forward and reverse trying to detect the problem, and some of the times it would just come to a sudden stop when i would put it in neutral and other times it would roll a few feet like normal. when it would come to sudden stop it would still move again when put it in gear but could tell something isnt right so i shut it down. anyone had any issues similiar to this, or any ideas what i need to be looking for? best thing i can think of is jack the back end up and use bucket to lift the front and see if can determine if its a one side problem or center or where the problem sounds like its coming from. any other suggestions of what i could do?

One possibility is a broken off chunk of bull gear getting picked up and locking things up, and then falls back down again when the machine stops.

Time to start pulling plugs and see what the magnets tell, will be messy.

As above. Start pulling drain plugs and see what's attached to them when they come out.

gonna pull the plugs in couple days i hope. will report back what i find. used a big pry bar on the spockets and rails. didnt notice nothing out of the ordinary.

havent forgot about this, just been busy and have decided to haul it back here to the house before i start draining and pulling stuff apart. and either been to wet or my trucker has been busy. hoping in couple of days can get it hauled but calling for rain few next 3 days.

got it home and drained the fluids this morning, trans and final drives was both clean and nothing out of the ordinary. the bevel gear department was another story. alot of metal and a few round metal chunks, a roller bearing perhaps? what do yall think and what would be my next step to figuring out the exact problem? pull the weight off the back and look into the inspection covers and see if i see anything?

Those are bearing rollers been thru the gears, a few times as well. Cages, splash guards, bearing bolt locks make up the remainder. Time to come down.

i got the weight and inspection covers off and looks like its the output shaft bearings on the transmission. hard to see the gears but looks like the pinion gear might have some damage but looks like the ring gear is still good im hoping.

From the photo (see the arrow) it looks to me as though both the pinion & the crown wheel are toast.

Will know best with the damaged parts on the ground off the machine. As Nige noted, the pinion & Bevel Gear are trashed.

anyone have any leads on where i might find a pinion? i can find the ring gear but no pinion. part number is 4s8715 thanks

    Try Offroad Equipment - www.offroadeq.com/

A quick look in SIS suggests that the pinion updates to a list of new numbers and the new pinion appears to have a different number of teeth. Unless you can find one NOS, it looks like the transfer box will have to be updated.

can the pinion and ring gear be changed to the newer numbers with different amount of teeth or will they not fit in my trans and ring gear shaft? i think i seen where the 941b had different amount of teeth. but could i put 941b pinion and ring gear into my machine or wont work?

aint having to much luck finding a pinion without spending fortune anyway. found 2 places that have them new for 1050. alot of places have the ring gear for around 450. i see some companies that make gears, whats yall opinion on that, if its even any cheaper or you think id be better off just spending the money on the oem and go with it.

The specification for the gears was changed for a reason. Personally, I would be updating it to the latest part numbers.

Below is an illustration of what you have now (on the left) and the modified/updated iron (on the right). The Service Magazine detailing the changes is attached. Note particularly the difference between the circled areas. The locknut Ref. #24 is there for a reason that is explained in the attached document.

so the list of parts in the attachment is whats need to swap it over, the housing and all is the same correct? and a google search of that part number says its 21 tooth vs the 12 of the original is that correct? if is does the ring gear have to be updated or the same part number as whats in my machine now. serial number is 70h617

The pinion, as noted earlier changes from 12 teeth to 21 teeth. The bevel gear is a bit of a mystery though. Despite part number changes it seems to always be given 53 teeth no matter which pinion it is mated with. This doesn't make sense to me because even if the two could be designed to mate together (which I doubt), the gearing of the tractor would be radically altered. The only thing I can find that makes any sense is that the same bevel gear is also used on a 60A 955. There is a serial number break at 60A1067 and although the gear is the same part number 9H6975, the earlier drawing says 35 teeth. I'd like to hazard a guess that somewhere back in the early days of the parts manuals being re-drawn, there was a transposing error and the gear was erroneously listed as having 53 teeth. How many teeth are there on your bevel gear and can you see a part number on it?

  20. #20wlf892020-08-18 20:50

my gear says 4k4632 i cant count them while still on the machine but id say 53 is correct serial number is 70h617

  21. #21Cmark2020-08-18 21:22

and your pinion has 12 teeth, correct? If so then the only thing I can think of is that all the pinions are 12T and the 21T thing is another typo????

  22. #22wlf892020-08-18 21:57

yes i think you are correct, i see a pic of the updated shaft and it looks to have 12teeth just like mine.

  23. #23Nige2020-08-21 13:48

The update concerned the pinion. The 4K-4632 (or the former number 9H-6975) bevel gear remains the same. Both the pinion & the bevel gear appear to be available aftermarket from AVspare and other sources. As I suggested before, give Offroad Equipment a call.

offroad is where i buy all of my parts. they can get aftermarket bevel gear but only cat pinion for 1325. i havent found a aftermarket one anywhere

There are a couple of sources listed on Machinery Trader. it does not say if they are OEM or aftermarket, new or used.
