Cat 950F II error codes

New Guy · 2017-03-20 16:04

Hi everyone, I have a 1997 CAT 950F II loader with a bunch of error codes on the dash, i think i know the reason for few of them but is there a way to find out what they are and to clear them manually without the need to visit to the local CAT dealer? I also have another issue which is when i raise the boom for the first time in the day it drops down two feet and stops immediately no matter how high i raise it once i let go of the raising lever it drops then stops right away and it does it only once, i was told on my old post that it has something to do with the ride control system which in reality i don't see the point of it when iam operating the machine, but i turned the ride control switch off but nothing changed, could that be a faulty relief valve somewhere? Iam also looking for the injectors timing adjustment tooling.. anyone? A super B-train load of thanks!

    Hi Mark, The S/N: 5SK02577, and here are the codes: 1- 096F03 2- 110F08 3- 177F04 4- 248F02 5- 324F05 6- 600F04 7- 819F02 8- 821F04 9- 081 10- 621F02 11- 680F02 12- 617F05 13- 668F02 14- 168F00 15- 168F01 Just to explain i was rebuilding the cabin on this machine and i ran it few times with a bad alternator and the transmission was not shifting, and few other times with the instrument cluster removed, i thought this might be related to some of the codes. Thanks.

hi, when you scroll through the codes do any of them display (SERV CODE) in the upper right hang corner. they will be active codes if present and yes you can clear the codes with out a visit from the dealer if you need the procedure just ask 96 fuel level sender 110 engine temp sensor 177 trans temp sensor 248 data link 324 action lamp 600 hyd temp sensor 819 display data link 821 display power supply 621 down shift switch 680 ride control switch 617 air inlet heater relay 668 shift handle 168 electrical system voltage all these are fairly typical of disconnected circuits or low system voltage

Hi Mark, thanks for the info, by looking at the break down of the codes almost all of them are related to the repairs i did on the machine back in the day, i also looked at the dash and there's a " SERV CODE" where you said it might be, but i want to mention that the codes are not appearing at the moment, the SERV CODE is just present on the corner above the meter reading, the codes i mentioned i recorded them last year and iam not sure if they started flashing as i connected the instrument cluster or they appeared after i indued them in some sort of way, so at the moment there are no codes flashing and the machine is running perfectly fine, though i feel it's a little not as responsive as i think it should and this is why iam looking for the Injector timing tooling. Please supply the procedure to clear the codes. Thank you

hi here is procedure to clear codes you can only do this when the code is displayed and not actgive you don't have to go to the trouble of making a scroll box but is very handy as you can do other stuff as well just use some jumper wires usually under the dash there will be either a 4 pin sure seal connector or a four pin deutch connecter this is the service connecter that you use for this process Mark

  6. #6New Guy2017-03-26 14:58

Thank you very much for the procedure, i will try to get on it sometime this coming week and i will revert with the results.

Hi! i need your help I had this problem few weeks now and i can figure out what was wrong. This unit when on still the RPM reach 2200 only and when you get this thing to work in load the RPM will go down to 1500 and no power. Please need your help. Thanks More info: I am not sure if this code are active 082 030 248.02 081 036 296.14 737.13 596.09 296.09 Please can give me the meaning of this error code Thanks

Also please post the machine Serial Number......... I think I know what might be wrong with your machine but I'll wait to see what model it is before I comment further.

I have one more question. Which of those Diagnostic Codes are Active.? In other words when you scroll through the codes which ones does the SERV CODE icon (see below) light up..? Any of the Codes where SERV CODE does not light up are Logged. They should be cleared at some point but they will not affect the performance of the machine.

  14. #14Nige2019-12-21 09:20

The Codes you posted above are all (except one) an indication that there is a communication issue between the ECMs for the Power Train and the Implement System, and also between those two ECM's and the Monitor System. Has this machine had any major repair done to it recently - one that would require (for example) the transmission to be removed.?

  15. #15Nige2019-12-21 09:25

The one exception to what I wrote above is for the left pedal (neutralizer) position sensor. Please check the Code. In your original list you said it was "737.13". Did you by any chance mean 737.03..? That would make more sense. Also is the Code Active.?

  16. #16becong2019-12-21 16:00

Yes sir, dealer works on replacing engine ECM, and also replacing one joystick for the boom arm. probably this error was not been cleared off the system. When i try to scroll in the monitor those error code that i posted has no serv code flash on in the right corner display all of them sir.

  17. #17becong2019-12-21 16:16

More info sir, this unit was submerged half way in the flood and did have the problem of loss power as i mentioned. the dealer did was trial and error to find the caused, replaced the engine ECM with a loaner to prove that is not faulty and the original ECM was fine, so it was installed back, and some of the engine sensors were changed except speed sensor.

  18. #18Nige2019-12-21 18:33

OK, all good information. "Water in the works" is not good though............. First I suggest that you attempt to clear all the Codes. If they are Logged as you say (no SERV CODE icon for any of them) then clearing them should not be a problem. Go to this thread and read posts 50-52. This will walk you through the process of how to clear Codes with nothing more than two short pieces of automotive wire and three Deutsch terminal sockets. HeavyEquipmentForums Get all the Codes cleared if you possibly can and then report back. This one could take a while because the diagnostics will need to be attacked in a very methodical way.

  19. #19becong2019-12-27 16:43

Thank you sir, i will try to make my scroll box and will go thru the procedure and i will report you back. And i will also check if the code listed is 737.13 or 737.03 i confirm this as will. thank you sir.

  20. #20Nige2019-12-27 17:51

As I said before, you don't need to make a box initially. All you need is 2 lengths of wire and 3 Deutsch terminal sockets. Click the link in Post #19 above, it will take you straight to it.

  21. #21becong2020-01-08 16:16

Thank you sir Nige, have done erasing all error code and also checking fuel line for any possible restriction flows of fuel, fuel pressure regulator check. start up the unit and operate short time and found no error pop up in monitor but still have the engine goes up to 1500 rpm during loading the bucket. if no load rpm achieve to 2200 rpm. What could be possible cause of under power. Unit S/N J5J01092 Thanks

  22. #22Nige2020-01-09 14:58

OK so on the face of it the problem does not appear to be a Diagnostic Code causing the issue. Do a couple of tests and post the results:- 1. With the bucket on the ground and the service brake fully applied using the right pedal, engage the loader in 3rd speed forward. Then accelerate to full throttle. Record the maximum RPM of the engine. WARNING - THE MACHINE MAY MOVE if the braking system is not 100% efficient. 2. Tilt the bucket right back to the stops with the engine at idling speed. When the bucket touches the stops press the accelerator while holding the tilt lever in the "Tilt Back" position. Record the maximum engine RPM. 3. With the bucket on the ground and the engine idling push the bucket lift control to the Lower position. This will raise the front wheels off the ground. When the lift cylinders are fully contracted accelerate the engine to maximum while holding the control in the "Lower" position. Record the maximum engine RPM. 4. If you can do it, repeat Tests 1 & 2 together and record the maximum engine RPM. (I can tell you now that will be lower than for Test 1 alone).

  23. #23becong2020-01-10 19:10

Ok sir will do it as you instructed and will report to you in a coming days later. Thank you very much for walking me in on this problem.

  24. #24Nige2020-01-10 19:18

Also when you perform the tests make sure to observe the quantity and colour of the smoke coming out of the exhaust. While I think about it you could temporarily remove the air filter elements while you perform the tests. Just make sure to put them back afterwards..!!

  25. #25becong2020-01-13 05:45

Good Day Sir, Result of the following test. Please note idle 800 rpm Refer to: Step 1: 1900 rpm Step 2: 2300 rpm Step 3: 2200 rpm Step 4: 1500 rpm Sir, this are the result of all the test, and observation of the smoke out of the stack are visible black smoke but not heavy. also during acceleration the response is quite late mean not abrupt response when accelerating. Hopefully this will be helpful information referring my problem. Thanks

  26. #26Mobiltech2020-01-13 07:20

Have you changed the inner and outer air filter since being in flood?

  27. #27Nige2020-01-13 07:33

You should have had (almost) no black smoke at all when accelerating the engine to make those tests, except when you initially floor the throttle maybe just a small puff of dark smoke. Otherwise the exhaust should appear like pure hot air coming out of the pipe. Did you temporarily remove the air filters to perform the tests as I suggested.? Or did you leave them in place.? If you did not remove them then try doing just that. Run the tests again and compare the results to the first time. Either way, based on the results that you posted your engine RPM (and therefore power) appears to be low. Test 1 you should be looking for 2185 ± 65 rpm. Your actual figure was only 1900, so you are down by almost 300 RPM compared to the specification. You mentioned in Post #18 on Page 1 about the engine ECM being changed temporarily by the dealer for diagnostic purposes. Does the engine have the original ECM installed back in it now..?

  28. #28becong2020-01-14 05:16

Yes sir, i do removed the air element before conducting the test as you instructed, all fuel filter had been changed also before the test and the original ECM was installed back. thanks

  29. #29becong2020-01-14 05:22

we took off the outer and inner filter to make use we are not starving air sir.

  30. #30Mobiltech2020-01-14 07:14

You will need to check fuel pressure and boost pressure next. You could also inspect the turbo for wheel or housing damage or interference.

  31. #31Nige2020-01-14 08:02

I never asked you before to check what is the High Idle speed of the engine with no load. It should be 2350 RPM. Please check and let us know. I suspect it will be OK because you achieved 2300 RPM in hydraulic stall in Test Step 2 above, but just ticking the box. As a last throw of the dice regarding the possibility of it being something simple, I would suggest to drain some fuel from the bottom of the fuel tank just to make sure that there is no water or sediment left in the tank. (You should be doing this as a maintenance task about once a month anyway.) I have no idea what was done to clean it after the loader was submerged in water as per your earlier posts. Remove the plug #1 and loosen the bolt #2. Allow fuel to drain until is comes out clean. Depending on how much you find in the tank you may have to consider completely removing the tank and cleaning it internally. Once you establish that the tank is completely clean, I would remove all the flexible fuel lines (e.g. #26) between the fuel tank and the engine and blow out each one with compressed air. Also remove every hose connection (elbows, etc.) such as #9 on the illustration below and blow them out one by one to make sure nothing is impeding the flow of fuel. If that produces negative results then you are into testing fuel pressure and turbocharger boost as suggested by Mobiltech in post #31 above.

  32. #32becong2020-01-14 18:29

Good day sir, before i made this post we already cleaned out all possible dirt and water in all the fuel system lines including, replacing filters and etc. While testing the rpm on high idle speed we achieve 2200-2300 which is marginal to the specs. the only problem while scooping the gravel it has only 1500-1600 rpm in full load. I was not paying attention of the wastegate if it was functioning during operation i will check it sometime today. thanks One more question sir, are any strainer along the fuel lines from secondary fuel filter before going to injectors. thanks

  33. #33becong2020-01-14 18:34

To make myself clear sir, you mean turbo boost pressure and fuel pressure can you throw me some specs what i'm suppose to get? thanks

  34. #34Nige2020-01-15 04:24

I understand what you're saying, and it may be only a remote chance but did you remove EVERY pipe fitting, elbow, etc, etc, in addition to the fuel supply/return hoses just to make sure that none of them was obstructed.? For example, did you completely disassemble the head assembly of the secondary fuel filter, or remove the injectors and clean out the fuel passages in the cylinder head.? What complicates everything in this particular machine is the fact that it was flooded, and it is essential to remove even the remotest possibility that water or anything else got to places that it shouldn't have got into. There is nothing mentioned, and it is not usual on this type of system. If you cannot see anything then I would think that there isn't one. Turbo boost is quoted as 22.5 psi @ Full Load RPM, which is 1800. If you stall the torque converter as per the test in Step 1 (where you got 1900) above that should be close enough to get a reasonably accurate reading of boost pressure. Fuel pressure - with the torque converter stalled as above - 58-76psi At Low Idle - 58-64psi. If you can measure unfiltered and filtered fuel pressure, the pressure drop across the secondary fuel filter should be in the region of 5psi with a new element installed. Port #1 is unfiltered fuel. Port #2 is filtered fuel.

  35. #35becong2020-01-15 18:02

Thank you sir, i will physically check the boost pressure and fuel pressure respectively, and also will do the filters head and fitting to make sure its clean and possible pulling out injector as will to check passages, will back to you to report any finding. thanks
