Hi All Have a Cat 950gc with a C7.1 engine 2021 year with 5000 hrs on it that had the engine water pump fail (water coming out of the tell tale hole). Renewed the water pump and done a full service at the same time, This was when we found the engine breather filter clogged up. (part number 339-1048) Removed the filter then run the machine up and it started making steam from the filter housing. Also found the engine oil filler tube has steam cumming out if you remove the oil filler cap when its running? We run the engine for about 1 hr or so and its still making steam. Just to make things really odd the engine oil wasn't milky when we removed the old oil, so this seems very odd to me. Can someone point me at something stupid that i'm missing. Thanks in advance
You either have left over water boiling off as the engine gets warmer, or a new leak to pan that is steaming. Is the antifreeze level going down. Is the oil level going up. Simon C
Hi Simon This is exactly what we was thinking that the engine was boiling off the water from the damaged water pump. The antifreeze has gone down a few mm in the tank from when it was first started cold to when it was back to cold the next day. Oil level has stayed on the mark after its service. but i'm guessing its not been running long enough to show the level going up at all if it is mixing. When we drained the old engine oil we did note it was 2.5 ltrs over filled ? but the oil wasn't milky at all. So have put it down to the driver over filling it in the last 500 hrs sins service. Starting to think head gasket.... Just looking to see if i'm missing something before we strip it.
might suggest an oil sample to give more insights. Would be cheap place to start.
Oil sample could save bearings also that dont like antifreeze. Oil change and filter in order also as they are possibly contaminated. It would require 2 changes minimum to get it all out cause some hides in the cooler. Simon C
And possibly a crankshaft as well.
are you positive it is steam? sounds more like blowby.
Hi yes its 100% steam. Getting water drip out of the bottom of the breather filter. We've been running it in the workshop with the breather lid off to see if it will clear.
