At work we have 2 identical 966d's they both have 3306's but one of them smokes real heavy when getting on the throttle but will clear up in about 2 seconds and when you let off and hit it again it will smoke heavy but clears up. I just replaced turbo because of this and it did get better because before it would smoke constantly when wide open but only on the last 1/4 of throttle and with no load. So is this a boost problem or possibly pump or gov? There was an improvment with reman turbo but our other one doesn't smoke at all like this and boss thinks they should both run with minimal black smoke. Any ideas where to look?
Both same # hours . Air restriction ??
fairly close in hours and don't think air filters are the cause since it does clear up, unless you mean manifold restriction?
had a situation once where the inside of a hose between intake and air filter was restricted. That would not account for it clearing up. Sticky valve ?? Try some Mystery Oil
Aneroid in the pump might be out of adjustment or messed up, charge air pipes, connecting hoses/o-rings or clamps could be bad and leaking boost. Do they have water cooled intercoolers?
no intercoolers on either machine, maybe needs a boost gauge installed. what should boost pressure be anyway?
Johnny, Sounds like the Fuel ratio control needs reconditioning. It holds the rack back from hitting the stop untill the turbo has built up enough boost to burn the fuel. If you want to get a good idea how the two machines are performing. Hook a boost gauge to the inlet manifold and a tach to the engine. Load the machines up and compare. Boost pressure is usually around one atmosphere (15 Psi, 31" Hg, or 100 Kpa.) Hook up equipment and stall torque. Compare machines and post what you get here. I just looked up fule specs for a 99X but left at work. Think Hi is 2400, full load around 2200 but not sure. Later Bob
Bob/Ont has the best idea. If the fuel ratio is not working correctly it will load the engine with fuel. And with no or low boost pressure the engine wont clean out.
Where abouts is the fuel ratio control located? Will injection pump need to be removed? Also not sure on how to hook up tach. Also I think they are 94x and not 99x not sure if that matters though to get a rough idea whats going on. And whats best way to stall torque since all our piles are frozen, will cylinder reliefs do it? that will stall machine.
Sounds like ours at work. Pump is turned up 15%. Maybe one is stock and one is turned up?
Johnny, the air fuel ratio control is on the back of the governor, sticks out about 5" and has a 1/4" line from the intake manifold connected to it bringing the boost pressure. If you take it apart pay close attention to the order the springs and other parts are in. It may have a broken diaphram and someone adjusted it up to compensate. It's inactive on start up and only starts working when it gets engine oil pressure. There is a plastic cover held on by two bolts over the end of the tach shaft for mechanical drive, or use apiece of reflective tape on the damper for photo tach. To stall the torque hold the RH brake peddal and give it full throttle in 3rd or 4th gear. There is a red plastic plug with a brass screw sticking out of it, it is insulated and gets continuity to ground when the rack hits full fuel. If you have a continuity light loading engine untill light flickers indicates full load speed. Full throttle, RPM above full load no light, below full load light on full time, around full load light flickers. Later Bob
Thanks bob for all the info, I will try this soon but have a few jobs ahead of it like a front diff on cable skidder and a steering clutch on a 450b so that will keep me busy for a few days since I'm on my own in the shop. Also the machine that smokes was the one with the most power I was told you had to let off throttle when digging in pile because of tire spin so hopefully can get it back to that power level.
H,mmm here could well be part of the issue also, possibly had some rack settings adjusted that are creating the black smoke. Check if the little wire/seals is in place on the governor, there should be some 5/16 bolts i think they are that will have a hole drilled through the centre of the hex head that allows for the wire and seal to be tied off on, if it is missing then there is a fair chance someone has gone in and tweaked the settings.
I will check them both just too see if either has been messed with.
do a tc stall test and observe the conditon(rpm smoke fuel pressure ,boost etc).prior to tourbo replacement fuel supply presure and nozzles should have been checked
i dont think there is a problem with the loader that smokes. specially if it has more power. i would think someone probably turned up the fuel pressure and volume on the injection pump. not all that uncommon in my neck of the woods. specially on a cat 3306/3406 the pumps r real easy to do that to. done it quite often.
Well thats not quite accurate. The machine that smokes used to have more power and no smoke, now it has less power and is smoking but it has not worked since I installed new turbo. I think it will be working today so I will know if it is up on power or same, will also see if it rolls coal when you hold it on the floor.
heh johnny just curious to how ur results turned out on the 966d if ur prob was solved or not?
