I got a 1980 980C cat and everything is greaseable with the exception of the lower lift arm/bucket pins. Bucket is tight but makes the worse possible squeal. I can't find the service manual so I have a few questions 1. How do I remove the bushing/pin 2. How can i check to see how much oil is in there? 3. If low or empty what type & how much oil should I refill it with? 4. Any videos of this process available?
There was likely grease zerks on there at some point in time, pins are a press fit in Bucket and a bugger to get out where will likely destroy them removing them, Cat is the only place I ever found them but there have been others mention another company on here that might.
First off to get better answers for a Cat or for that matter any machine a S/N is very important! Second why don't you at the very least have an operators/maintenance maanual? If you HAD given the full serial number I could give you a direct link to the page whaere you can order one, probably the best money you would ever spend on this machine. That said go to this page " https://www.servicemanualpro.com/ " and enter your serial number and it will tell you all the officail manuals you can get either in paper or on CD's. Third and last I will attach the instructions for lubing the bottom pin on at least one version of the 980C. You might be too late if it has been run dry and is squealing. If you do try to lube as the instruction say and oil just runs out of the seals on the pin you could do one of two things. A-Replace the pins with new and then follow proper maintenance procedures in future or B- Install a regular grease fitting and just grease it every 8 to 10 hours or as needed. Not sure if there is a hole in the collets that lines up with the gease/oil fitting. Might be possible to modify cvollet s you coud grease with out removing the collet. Heck I'll even do half your work for you on getting the manual "Link to 980C Manuals" https://www.servicemanualpro.com/?page=products&category=28&model=980C WHEEL LOADER Just note you still need the S/N to order, but $42.00 for op/maint manual on CD will probably save you that much in the first month.
I can't remember if they made a severe duty system for a 980 or not. The severe duty is basically a track roller clamped in the loader frame and tapered bushings that go threw the bucket ears. A picture is worth alot. And a Serial # is a must.
My experience with the sealed pin and bushing is that if the oil has run out and you hear squealing, it's time for new pins. Grease might buy you a little time but you don't want to put any wear on the wedge fit in the boom arms or in the bucket lugging itself.
Wot he said ........... ^^^^^^ Time for new pins if the old ones are squealing that bad. No aomount of oil is going to make that noise go away now. You need a Forcing Screw Part Number 6V-0187 to get the collets out of the inside & outside ends of the bucket pins. If you remove bolt #21 you'll find the collet has a fine thread in it for the extractor bolt.
You should not have to remove the collets or pin to put 90 wt. oil in them. Even if they are squealing I would try oiling them before replacing. Either style of collet has a plug on them ,under that plug is another plug in the pin .Remove all 4 plugs and using a clean grease gun with 90 wt. oil in it pump oil in one side till it comes out the other . I seem to recall a fitting needs to be screwed into the pin If you pull the collets you will need the tooling to press collets to 50 tons . Good luck Bob
Surely you jest. With a machine as old as this one you're lucky to have black and white pictures in the Service Manual. See attachment. That would only be for the tilt link (dog bone) pin. The bucket pin collets are installed with a 14lh hammer. Disassembling the bucket pins without pulling the dog bone pin might be a bit of a challenge, but certainly not impossible if the linkage is even the slightest bit worn.
If he did replace the pins are those upgradable to grease pins like the G's are? Also considering the age of the machine is it possible to add a grease zerk without replacing the pins to keep the machine working as its probably a part time loader
Attaching the directions on lubing the lower bucket pins agree that if pins are squealing replacing is the best long term repair. But if not so bad as to have caused outer part of pin assembly to be turning in the boom greasing may buy some time. Also including a cutaway view of the pin and collets to show where the plugs are. They are very small, 1/16 np thread I believe the part number for the fittings are in the lubrication instructions. But notice that there does not appear to be access to those plugs while collets are in place. I recall that one the 988B machines there were three pusher holes used to remove the collets and if one was careful to install the collets lined up with the plugs you could flush and refill pins with new oil with collets in place. Red lines point to the small plugs.
Also worth pointing out that if the pins are squealing the whole pin assembly is probably pretty close to rotating in the end of the Lift Arm "jaw". If that happens you are into line boring..............
